At Fantasy Outliers, we believe that machine learning combined with human expertise leads to better results than either by itself. While some of these projections may seem odd, outlandish even, most of the time, MathBox has a reason for its decisions — and beat ESPN last year for likely starters.
That said, the machine learning models are focused on relevant players, so projections are less accurate for benchwarmers. Also, situational things come up, which require folks like you and me to adjust some of the models’ projections every week.

Quarterback Rankings based on Machine Learning
- MathBox loves it some Josh Allen at home against the Jets. It’s risky, but possible.
- Marcus Mariota could be a good play if you’re desperate
Running Back — Rankings in Standard and PPR based on Machine Learning
- You’re probably not in the playoffs if you own Lamar Miller, but MathBox thinks he’s a low-end RB1 this week at home against the Colts
- MathBox has Gus Edwards and Peyton Barber as mid/low-end RB2’s this week (higher than ESPN), and could be good value plays if you’re desperate
Wide Receiver — Rankings in Standard and PPR based on Machine Learning
- MathBox loves Robert Woods and Brandon Cooks this week against Chicago, who has given up the 29th most points to wide receivers so far this year
- Amari Cooper has a good matchup this week at home against Philadelphia, and MathBox is buying it at 15 points vs ESPN’s 13.
- Adam Humphries could be a sneaky play this week, with a good matchup versus New Orleans. It’s a risk that could pay off…
Tight End — Rankings in Standard and PPR based on Machine Learning
- MathBox is high on Jared Cook, Kyle Rudolph, and David Njoku relative to ESPN, who could all be good value plays
Defense/Special Teams Rankings based on Machine Learning
- Detroit Lions have a good matchup in Arizona, and MathBox thinks the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers could be good value plays
Kicker Rankings based on Machine Learning
- Brandon McManus, Graham Gano, and Chris Boswell could be streamers at Kicker if you’re desperate
