February is Black History Month, and this city is arguably the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, a pivotal period in Black history. Memphis, Tennessee is home to the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. Sadly, one of the countries darkest moments, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., occurred at this motel. Although this is a dark stain of the past, the museum is a beacon of light that shows the road from despair to triumph.

Memphis, Tennessee

The city’s NBA team motto is “Grit and Grind”, and that’s the perfect description of the Civil Rights Movement. These black leaders undoubtedly had grit, and please believe, they never stopped the grind. Outside of celebrating black history, the city has a personality like you’ve never experienced before. Around every corner, you’ll find BBQ so good that’ll make you wanna slap ya Mama, down home Blues that’ll speak to the depth your soul, and views of the Mississippi that will take your breath away. This February, book a flight, “Root for everybody Black” (shout out to Issa Rae), and let’s look at the road to black excellence in Memphis, Tennessee.

Beale Street

Important to note: We know that travel looks a little different right now. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t add travel ideas to your Bucket List. Plus, we want to continue to inspire you with new travel content alongside the latest COVID-19 travel advice and updates. Always check local government guidelines for the latest health and safety guidance before booking your trip.

National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel

National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine

The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel is a bucket list history item for travelers and historians alike. Between slavery, boycotts, assassinations, and the fight to defeat “separate but equal”, this is the nation’s story of the Civil Rights Movement. No other place can you get a look at the last few hours of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life before he was assassinated. Guests can literally look inside Dr. King’s hotel room, which is frozen in time, from the fatal day of April 4, 1968. The museum has preserved the room from that exact moment. Not only can you see inside, but you are also able to stand directly on the same balcony where the civil rights leader stood before his life was tragically snatched from him. Dr. King’s hotel room is the last exhibit in the museum, but before you get to him, there are countless amazing exhibits and artifacts from other events and leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Plan for about a 2-hour self-guided tour. Be sure to check out the Birmingham Freedom Bus Riders and Greensboro Lunch Counter Sit-in interactive exhibits. Sure to leave you with chills, these exhibits will take you back in time. This is the history of the movement. This is Black history. This is the story of the people. This is why Black Lives Matter.

Room 306 (Dr. King’s room) at the Lorraine Motel

Room 306 Balcony

Greensboro Lunch Counter Sit-In Exhibit

Birmingham Freedom Bus Riders Exhibit

Memphis Mentions

After your history lesson, treat yourself to a date with the city. The “Home of the Blues” has so much to offer; we guarantee you’ve never had a date like this before. Below we’ve listed a handful of restaurants, attractions, and experiences worth mentioning. Note: The suggestions listed below are just a mere fraction of what Memphis to offer. These “Memphis Mentions” are just starting points.

“Put Some South in your Mouth” with the Best Meal on Beale.

Blues City Café

138 Beale St. Memphis, TN

Memphis’ main attraction is most notably, the famous Beale Street. It’s like New Orleans’ Bourbon Street’s, little brother. Beale is the hot spot in Memphis for all live music, mouthwatering food, and ultimate entertainment. Just like Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Beale offers to-go alcoholic drinks and practices the “open-container law”. Patrons can freely take their drink from one bar or venue to the next; all while strolling and people watching along the street. You’re going to work up an appetite, and we suggest none other than the Best Meal on Beale, Blue’s City Café. You get a two-for-one special with this spot. They’ve offer live music and a taste of the dirty south all in one. Known for their Gumbo fries (Yes, they have actually matched Gumbo and fries together, and it is a joyful union that is built to last.) fried seafood, and Memphis style BBQ, you’ll be licking your fingers in a food coma in no time. This might want to be your last stop before ending the night. After this rich taste of the south in ya mouth, you’re gonna be ready to head back to the house.

Gumbo Fries

The Best Meal on Beale Combination Platter

Cowboy Cut Ribeye (24oz) “So good it’ll make a bulldog bust his chain!”

Sweet Treat: Memphis Style

1657 Wells Station Rd Memphis, TN

“We didn’t invent the snow cone, just the snow cone supreme.” And supreme it is, indeed. Located in a neighborhood near Beale, you’ll find the sweetest spot in Memphis, Jerry’s Snow Cone. Open since 1960, Jerry’s has been serving their supreme snow cones to crowds on a daily basis. This cash-only spot is a local favorite and hidden gem of the city. With hundreds of snow cone flavors, you’re bound to find a flavor that’s your jam. If you haven’t noticed already, Memphis likes to pair savory tastes together. Jerry’s Snow Cone Supreme is the love child of a snow cone and ice cream. The line can get long, but if you’re a foodie, you know that’s a GOOD sign. You’ve got the time, so stay in line. Don’t forget to make it supreme, and top it off with that sweet Memphis Cream.

Memphis-Mississippi Connection

Located in a pyramid (You read that correctly. I said pyramid. There is a PYRAMID in Memphis, Tennessee. ) will you find the most breathtaking bird’s-eye view of where Memphis and the Mississippi River connect. This 103- room lodge that’s located in a Bass Pro Shop, that’s designed in the shape of a pyramid, is the only place you can have a top-notch aerial view of Tennessee and the Mississippi River. Go 300 feet in the air with a 3–5 minute elevator ride to the top of the pyramid, and have dinner and drinks at The Lookout. This restaurant serves five star cuisine and old fashioned Tennessee whiskeys; all paired with beautiful sunset views of the mighty Mississippi River. If you’re not afraid of heights, we implore you to step outside on the clear plexiglass floor as you overlook the river. Don’t look down, though. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is no fee to visit. Marvel at the breathtaking landmark that mirrors Dr. King, and absorb the feelings of hope that radiate from this historical structure. Standing next to this memorial instantly reignites a fire of passion and determination from within. Additionally, bartenders have poured up for some people that are “kind of a big deal”. #anchorman

Presidents such as Lincoln, Taft, Coolidge, and Wilson have pulled up a seat at this bar to discuss politics over whiskey. Some other famous customers include Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, and Buffalo Bill. To say the least, you’re drinking in good company at this spot. Introduced by Senator Henry Clay in 1851, order D.C.’s first Mint Julep with Kentucky Bourbon. Trust, after one of these, you’ll be feeling real presidential.

Mint Julep Cocktail

POV

“Visually” Cool

POV at the W Hotel

Think bottle service with a view of the White House. Because at POV, that’s exactly what you’re going to get. This swanky bar on the covered roof of the W Hotel serves you creatively-crafted cocktails with a side of unparalleled panoramic views of Washington, D.C. With floor-to-ceiling retractable windows, you’re good no matter when you visit. If you travel to the city during the cooler months, this covered rooftop bar is perfect for sips and sites while you stay warm. If you’re there in the warmer months, stay cool with a fresh breeze from the Potomac river. Don’t leave this bar without trying their specialty cocktail, “Yes We Can.” After that, you can drop the mic and #ObamaOut.

“Yes We Can”(and keep the can) specialty cocktail

The Board Room

“Nostalgically” Cool

The Board Room

Remember when everyone wasn’t on their smartphones, and we actually played hands-on games? No? Me either. But, bring that mojo back at the Board Room bar in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. This bar encourages you to get off your phone and interact. With an extensive collection of board games, you’re bound to find your childhood favorite. For $2, you can rent classic favorites like Operation and Hungry Hungry Hippos. Or keep up with the times, and rent Cards Against Humanity for some raunchy fun. You can even discover something new with vintage games you’ve never even heard of. For my beer folks, you’re in luck. Beer is the main beverage here, but wine and cocktails are served as well. It’s #gameon at this cool spot.

Blood Orange Goss

Soak up the Booze

Original Chili Half Smoke at Ben’s Chili Bowl

Before you wave “Bi-den” to President Trump, soak up the booze at D.C.’s best known hotdog joint, Ben’s Chili Bowl. This iconic and historic landmark typically has lines outside the door, but it’s justified. These chili cheese dogs have been coined as some of the best in the country by food enthusiasts, celebrities, and tourists alike. Open since 1958, this hotdog spot has served an impressive lists of guests. You’ll see pictures of comedians Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle (just to name a few) on the walls of the restaurant. President Barack Obama ate lunch there ten days before his inauguration. It was his first stop upon arrival, and he’s been in love ever since, as he frequents there often. We’re willing to bet you’ll fall in love with them too. Don’t forget to do it for the ‘gram. Give Ben’s a thumbs up, and get your selfie in front of this iconic landmark’s mural. #benschilibowl4thewin

Obama Mural outside Ben’s Chili Bowl

Want to read more?

These 5 Travel Trends That Are Picking up Steam

Where Can Americans Travel Right Now?

Safety Tips for Flying During COVID-19

Download FareUpThere Today and Earn Miles With Every Review

Make the most of your travels and earn rewards at the same time.

2020 was pretty unlucky. This January, book with FareUpThere, and try your luck in Vegas. Place your bet on a better year than 2020 in the city that never sleeps. The desert is cool, and the stakes are high. After a year like we’ve had, you deserve some fun and R&R. Let loose and relax. Go wild, even. Because what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Via Unsplash

Important to note: We know that travel looks a little different right now. But we want to continue to inspire you with new travel content alongside the latest COVID-19 travel advice and updates. Always check local government guidelines for the latest health and safety guidance before booking your trip.

Hit the Jackpot in More Ways Than One

Yeah, we’re betting on 2021, but that’s not all there is to do. Las Vegas, Nevada is more than gambling. Don’t spend your entire time in the casinos, when the city is calling you. With these recommendations to hit (like the jackpot) you’ll have an unforgettable trip in Sin City. With shows, world-renowned cuisines, spas, craft cocktails, flashing lights, and thrill attractions, you’re guaranteed to feel like a million bucks. Reap the benefits of a more quiet Vegas with filthy cheap flights and hotels. Stay in luxury for pennies. Book a flight, pack your bag, and hit the Las Vegas Strip. This year, the odds are in your favor.

Via Unsplash

via Unsplash

Ante Up

via Unsplash

No matter what your game is, Vegas has something for you. Poker, Blackjack, slot machines, you name it, and Sin City is ready to play. You’ve got to play to win, so bet as little or as much as you like. Sports fan? January is the perfect time for football fans to visit the city. Bring your Fantasy Football knowledge with you because it’s NFL playoff season. Put your money on the sportsbooks, and win big when your team scores. Don’t limit yourself to the casino at your hotel. Stroll down the strip, and try your luck all over in countless hotels. You never know, you might be one pull away from instant retirement. #ChaChing

Relax and Refresh like a High Roller

Caesars Palace

We all feel defeated in 2020. Let’s flip the narrative, and start the new year feeling victorious and refreshed. One perk of visiting Vegas in January is that you can book luxuriously royal suites for practically nothing. With Winter being one of Vegas’s slowest months, hotels have dropped their rates and offer complimentary upgrades in order to attract tourists. Take advantage, and book the suite you’ve always dreamed of. In Vegas, you really can’t go wrong with any hotel choice. From The Bellagio, Caesars Palace, and The Venetian (just to name a few) you’ll be treated like royalty, because this city is all about hospitality. Browse hotels, pick a good fit, and be treated like the boss you are.

Go Out With a Bang

Slotzilla Zipline Fremont Experience

Slotzilla Zipline Fremont Experience

For my thrill seekers, this is for you. Literally, soar into 2021. If you’re brave enough, check out this daring attraction on Fremont street in downtown Las Vegas. Slotzilla is an 11-story slot machine zip line attraction that lets you fly over three city blocks or take off like a rocket over five city blocks, under a massive video screen. This is an adrenaline rush like one you’ve never felt before. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but neither is this next place.

Heart Attack Grill

Triple Bypass Burger at Heart Attack Grill

Heart Attack Grill

Before you leave Fremont Street, visit Vegas’ most controversially oddity, the Heart Attack Grill. This unique restaurant has an unheard of promotion. If you weigh over 350 pounds, you receive unlimited free food. Those who dare are invited to weigh themselves at the door on an electronic cattle scale in front of a cheering crowd. In addition, guests are referred to as patients, and their menu items are listed as, “Single Bypass, Double Bypass, Triple Bypass” burgers, etc. Their Quadruple Bypass burger has been listed by the Guinness Book of World Records for the most calorific burger with a calorie content of 9,983 calories! If you had any calories left with this trip in Vegas, the Heart Attack Grill just devoured them. Don’t forget to snap a pic for #foodstagram. Say cheese(burgers!)

When Matthew McConaughey coined the slogan, “Frost Yourself” in the 2003 romantic comedy, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, he wasn’t just talking about diamonds. Today is the first meteorological day of Winter, and why not explore one of the coldest places on Earth? If you’re a fan of the season, immerse yourself in one of the world’s most iciest places. Visit nature’s Winter Wonderland while the tickets are ridiculously cheap, the hotels are practically free, and you’ll have the island to yourself. Book that flight, bundle up, and let’s chill in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Reykjavik, Iceland

via Unsplash

Important to note: We know that travel looks a little different right now. Always check local government guidelines for the latest health and safety guidance before booking your trip.

We know it sounds crazy.

Ok, visit Iceland in the Winter? Who wants to go be a popsicle? Yes, it’s cold. Extremely cold. Yes, daylight is minimal. The nights are dark, but we guarantee you’ll never have a dull day. The island averages about five hours of effective daylight, but with these “Once in a Lifetime” experiences, we’ve got those 5 hours of daylight covered with unforgettable nights.

via Unsplash

But first, book a window seat.

Don’t sleep the entire flight. You’ll miss the views you’ve only seen on the National Geographic channel. Capture breathtaking aerial views of Iceland as you fly in. Before you get time on land, take in all the views while you’re 38,000 feet in the air. Who doesn’t love a birds-eye view? Oh, and don’t forget to catch the glaciers as you fly over Greenland, Iceland’s icy neighbor.

See the Northern Lights

via Unsplash

We told you the days are dark, but the nights get lit. This is Iceland’s magic. If you only do one experience discussed in this article, this has got to be it. The Winter is the most optimal time to see this natural phenomenon, and you simply cannot miss it while you’re there. We suggest booking a guided trip with a Northern Lights Tour company instead of hunting in the dark for the lights on your own. Guides know when, where and exactly how to capture views of these polar lights. Not to mention, they are skilled in interpreting the meteorological data and how to track them. We must add, that they’re not always guaranteed to show daily. You can’t control nature. However, tour companies track the data daily, and let tourists know ahead of time if the chances of seeing them are optimal or not. If not, they gladly reschedule you for the next day. All tours include a guide, transportation, and they mostly depart from Reykjavik.

Bathe in the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon Resort and Spa

Yeah, Iceland is cold, but it’s hot too. Taking a dip in a geothermal pool during the Winter is definitely a bucket list experience. Not to mention, it’s totally bragworthy. What better way to warm up and relax from searching for the Northern Lights than a bath in the Blue Lagoon? Iceland is a unique island that geothermally heats itself from their 30 active volcanoes. There are several geothermal pools in Iceland, but the Blue Lagoon Resort and Spa is the most popular and closest to Reykjavik. Add this experience to your bucket list.

Visit the Black Sand Beach

via Unsplash

No need to take any sand to this beach. Besides, it wouldn’t be the same anyway. If you’re a beach person at heart, Iceland’s got something for you too. Take a stroll down this unique beach with its distinctive Icelandic black sand. Watch waves crash in, and feel the crisp Arctic air blow in from the ocean. Iceland is truly unique in nature, and you can’t experience this anywhere else. Do some whale watching while you’re there, and don’t forget to bottle some black sand to take home.

Explore the Ice Caves in Iceland

via Unsplash

Imagine being able to walk inside a glacier. Touring a natural ice cave is a winter-only experience in Iceland that you simply cannot miss. No ice cave is the same, so you never know what you’re going to see. This is an authentic wonder of nature. Tour guides navigate tourists under the blue ice to find icy wonders that you never knew existed. This is one of the top Winter Iceland experiences, and definitely a bucket list item. How many people can say they walked inside a glacier before? Not many. That’s why this tour is highly popular, and we recommend you check availability and book well in advance. Really bundle up for this one! Layers on layers on layers, but it’s worth it.

Before you Fly Out

When in Iceland, drink like a Viking. They know their vodka. Take a strong Icelandic souvenir to enjoy at home from the duty-free shop in the Keflavík Airport. Locals claim this Icelandic vodka is the best in the world. The water used to make Reyka comes from a 4,000-year-old lava field, and is uniquely brewed from one of the coldest places on Earth. Not too many distilleries can match that. Strikingly smooth and crisp, you’ll enjoy this taste of Iceland when you get home. Bottoms up! #drinklikeaviking

The Pacific Connections Garden allows you to discover amazing plants from all five countries that are all connected by the Pacific Ocean.

Fall into Football

Century Link Stadium

Fall and football go together, and the Seattle Seahawks know how to play. These 2014 Super Bowl champs really know how to give their fans the ultimate game day experience. Even if you’re not a Seahawks fan, you’ll still feel the thrill of the game. Fans know how to crank it all the way up. The stadium gets so loud it’s been known to cause earthquakes. Get your game-day food fix at half time. Try a local favorite, and order a cream cheese Seattle- style hotdog.

Fall into the Eats

Hot Mess Bitch at Biscuit Bitch

Start your morning with a potty mouth at Biscuit Bitch . This quaint hole-in-the-wall breakfast spot allows you to order homemade comfort food all while saying the word “bitch’’ over and over again. They’re a specialty spot that serves creative variations of hot homemade biscuits and gravy. The line can grow long, but jam while you wait to the Motown tunes they blast. You’ll see the “bitches’’ in the kitchen, shakin’ and bakin’, while they flip your eggs. Think Southern hospitality meets the Pacific North West. But, with a dash of sass.

Pike Place Market

Enjoy fresh seafood? It doesn’t get fresher than this. Watch local fishmongers toss up their catch at the 108- year-old Pike Place Market. Stroll through the market and check out produce stalls, craft stands and specialty food shops, like Daily Dozen Doughnut. Don’t forget the coffee. If you’re a Starbucks fan, you’re in luck. Check out the very first Starbucks location in Pike Place Market.

Grilled Steelhead Trout at The Fisherman’s Restaurant & Bar

If you’re looking for ready-to-eat fish, look no further than The Fisherman’s Restaurant & Bar. Have lunch, and take in breathtaking views of the Pacific and the Seattle Great Wheel, a giant ferris wheel at Pier 57. Dine on the patio, and enjoy exquisitely prepared seafood from a world-renowned chef. Sip and relax with craft cocktails from the bar as you gaze at boats sailing by. For dinner, dine like a local. Check out Fat’s Chicken and Waffles . Don’t be fooled by the name. They serve a variety of foods from fried oysters, red beans and rice to shrimp and grits.

Fall into Fun

When Michelle Obama said, “When they go low, you go high”, she must have been talking about Seattle. Because in this city, you can do both. Go high first by visiting the world famous Space Needle. Take a “sky high” selfie while sitting on an all-glass floor on the lower level. Lean in and get breathtaking views of Mount Rainer, the Puget Sound , and the Cascades on the upper level with floor to ceiling glass. Standing at 605' tall, you’ll surely be feeling high.

Come back down from your high (no pun intended), and go low. Check out one of Seattle’s most unusual attractions, Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour. Stroll through entombed sidewalks and storefronts, and learn about the city’s past. Seattle literally rebuilt on top of itself after The Great Fire of 1889. The city is frozen in time, entombed below a vibrant and thriving city above ground. The 75-minute guided tour recants stories of pioneers from the past with some humorous punch lines. It’s history with some giggles.

Seattle Gum Wall in Pike Place Market

Before you catch your flight, get sticky in Seattle, and leave your mark on the city. The Gum Wall is by far, the oddest and most unique attraction in Seattle. Located in Pike Place Market, is the Gum Wall (or alley, actually) where you can stroll past 27 years of chewed up gum. Since 1993, residents and tourists have been sticking their gum on the wall and leaving their mark. Kind of gross? Yes. Should you pass up this sticky selfie? Absolutely not. #gettinstickywitit

Book a flight and explore this “haunted by history” destination. Take a break from the paranormal and double the fun. New Orleans offers a wealth of activities and experiences.

Bourbon Street

Nicknamed “The Big Easy”, it’s past is most definitely not. From pirates to murdered slaves and a yellow fever plague, New Orleans holds a dark past. Known to be the home for witches, ghosts, and vampires, this city is a paranormal mecca. Find the most frights in the French Quarter, where spirits are known to walk with the living.

Experience the Haunted New Orleans

New Orleans Cemetery

In New Orleans, the dead and the living never really part. They become neighbors. This city houses the departed in above-ground tomb cemeteries called, “Cities of the Dead”. Visit their most famous resident, Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau, in St. Louis Cemetery №1. People leave a variety of offerings as a sign of gratitude or to request a wish. Don’t forget to check out Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo Shop on Bourbon St. for charms, herbs, oils, etc. Note: No photography is allowed in the store.

The French Quarter

Listen to the tales of ghosts, vampires, and witches on one of the chilling French Quarter Phantom Ghost Tours. Don’t miss the grisly story of Dalphine Lalaurie. Nicolas Cage purchased the mansion in the French Quarter, but sold it shortly after. He could only spend one night there. (Tour guides will only take you across the street to view it. They refuse to walk on the same sidewalk as the mansion.)

Step back into history when cotton was king, and drive out to the Old River Road Plantations along the Mississippi River. Confederate Civil-War ghosts can’t seem to let go. The North won. The end.

Take a Paranormal Break

It’s not all doom and gloom in NOLA, though. In fact, this city parties like it’s 1999 all the time. With loose liquor laws in the French Quarter, pop in and out of bars with to-go drinks. Stroll, sip, and and be amazed all down Bourbon street. But don’t limit yourself to the French Quarter. Catch a street car and visit the Warehouse and Garden district for a more local experience. History buff? Drop by The National WWII Museum.

Jam with the locals, and hear live jazz on Frenchmen St. Grab a gourmet hotdog from Dat Dog while you’re there too. Ever had gator sausage?

Cafe Du Monde

The trip isn’t complete without a visit to Cafe Du Monde for The Big Easy’s signature sweet, the beignet. Wash it down with America’s first cocktail, the Sazerac, at The Carousel Bar in Hotel Monteleone. Be sure to watch your step. The bar actually spins like a carousel. Eat your way through the city with fine cuisine on every corner. Dine at Muriel’s Jackson Square where they keep a nightly reserved table for their resident ghost, complete with an offering of wine and bread.

The Natchez Steamboat

Before you fly out, cruise down the Mississippi in one of the country’s only original steamboats, The Natchez.
