The following is a satirical account and yet possibly true.

You come home after an infuriating workday. It’s time to eat and you barely have energy for making dinner, washing the dishes, and jadedly swiping through newsfeeds.

Wait. The phone beckons; your friend wants to hang out. Nope, can’t be bothered.

You have to get ready, find a meet up, and then come home late and miss your morning meeting. But you decide to go out and now suddenly think of the costs; they creep across your head like a train trundling through a busy city.

Why do drinks, appetizers and tip cost $40?! Maybe you should go… damn… your stupid $2000 monthly rent statement on your fridge slaps you back to reality. Your salary is not high. Inflation, what a joke. Financial stress sucks doesn’t it? Boredom and loneliness is worse though.

You don’t want to be bored and lonely do you? 🙃

For a mere monthly fee, you can venture into the imagination of others and escape into a void of endless fun. It keeps you ready and engaged; always primed ready to go. Everyone at work has it, you are now together with them. It knows who you are, what you like and remembers when you forget. By pressing play, boredom vanishes and now you can unburden yourself into bliss.

Welcome to the hyper-productive economy prison. Busy, tired, earn peanuts for rent and your only best friend and saviour is Netflix. It’s all you really need…
