I have gotten lots of emails from publishers in the last few weeks. Most of these are solopreneurs experiencing many changes with the recent Google update. This has caused a lot of anxiety for many.

But there is a silver lining! Your Flipboard presence is an alternative to diversify your traffic source.

Here are some recommendations to bypass search and continue to get traffic

There are better alternative places.

Share your magazines on widely read platforms like Reddit, Discord, and Tumblr. There is a whole world out there. Carve out a niche for yourself. Also, use social channels like Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Write descriptions for your topics and share.

Pro Tip: Curate a recipe magazine focusing on American food and share it in Sub-Reddit groups. Start a topic-centered Discord group to share your content or pin your magazines on Pinterest.

Join a Fediverse platform

Flipboard now supports many Fediverse platforms like ActivityPub, Bluesky, Mastodon, and Pixelfed. Set up an account and start testing results by sharing your content or magazines.

Flipboard has its Instance (server) at flipboard.social.com. It’s a slam dunk, I already use Flipboard and share my magazines on social media so it seemed convenient. The Instance you join is not as important as the result. You can talk to anyone across the Fediverse provided you are on a supported instance. Here is more info about the Fediverse Servers.

Pro Tip: Once you share your Flipboard links on Mastodon they refer traffic directly to your blog. If you share your magazines traffic goes directly to your magazine. I would share both and test.

Write with your readers in mind: Quality content matters more than you think. You have to change your mindset. We are all very used to producing content that ranks in search. Flipboard is based on topics. So keep tabs on your audience, the magazines they follow, and the articles they like. Produce engaging and visually appealing content that readers want to read and share.

Brand yourself and your publication: If you have a unique perspective or cover a particular topic, use this as a part of your branding. Having an identity on Flipboard will make you stand out. For example…you are a travel writer. Find a niche your readers respond to; it could be bicycle travel or walking tours. Say finance is your thing, maybe focus on millennial retirement savings.

Pro Tip: Put your blog on a subscription-paid platform like Substack, Patreon, or Medium. Offer to get information free of advertisements for a fee. Substack articles flip nicely into Flipboard. Take a look at this publication example.

Connect, connect, and connect again: Your readers and connections are the backbone of your Flipboard profile. Readers on Flipboard eventually become curators. They start by collecting articles to read or share; the rest is in a magazine. Your content could be among this curation. Join and form a community to build your profile and attract traffic to your web.

Pro Tip: Find like-minded people and curate your topics in their magazines and invite them to curate into your magazines. This activity will build your profile and help you get referral traffic.

Use email marketing

Your Flipboard magazines should be part of your email newsletter. Feature a magazine with every newsletter. This will send traffic to your website and to Flipboard.

Building your Flipboard profile may help to send referral traffic to your website.

Conclusion

There’s always the possibility to build a better mousetrap somewhere else. Building your Flipboard profile will help send traffic to your website.

Quality content + Community Engagement + Consistency = Traffic!

Best of Luck and Happy Flipping!
