Reciprocity and the cascading effect

“Guanxi” is one of the most mystic traits of Asian culture. In a nutshell, “Guanxi” is the negative version of reciprocity which leads to corruption. But reciprocity will perform positively when the people have a stronger will to succeed together. I think that crypto space should promote reciprocity more. You will never know how your clap or like on a particular post or tweet may bring a cascading viral effect which will help another person to succeed in the future and who then will help more people to succeed in the future of the future.

One example of this cascading effect is how we have joined Akash. I waked up in a morning seeing Jack Zampolin (worked in Tendermint at that time) tweeted about Akash. Then we have participated in Akash’s program. Then we appeared as a partner. I talked about this in previous post:

Now we are trying to help more people to understand and join Akash.

Back in 2018, I and my partner Kwun had bootstrapped and worked so hard to pursue our blockchain journey. At that time, we were (and still are) an alien in the startup space here in Hong Kong. We didn’t have a chance to pitch VC. We didn’t have a chance to pitch professional angels. We didn’t even have a chance to pitch accelerator. In fact, we have failed in all startup support programs of the HK government. All of them.

Referral matters

A friend of mine then referred us to AppWorks. We had an interview. Then we were accepted. We had enjoyed a few months in Taiwan with the fellows at AppWorks which are super productive. We made good friends. We pivoted. We shipped our products. Personally, I really love the style how AppWorks is running the accelerator.

We met LikeCoin at AppWorks. Perhaps, in retrospect, we might have some influence on them when they decided to migrate to Cosmos.

In Taiwan, we have met a crypto lover who have taught us a lot about crypto and have become our core supporter who then referred us to more people and projects.

(By the way, AppWorks Accelerator is recruiting for new batch. I highly recommend them to startups who want to explore Asia market. Apply here.)

Reciprocity is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get. Get started by following a person who has followed you.
