#10 • Stories & Lessons of Founding Baron Fig
Ten bodies filled the little closet we called our first studio in Midtown.
On this particular evening we had folding chars on top of folding chairs, friends and collaborators were packed to the brim. A box full of Chipotle was being passed around — it was filled with burritos, guacamole, and chips.
Everyone had come to our studio straight from their day jobs. Baron Fig was the work after work that didn’t quite feel like work. It was task with a purpose, and we all thrived on it.
This meeting marked the first step in creating our Kickstarter campaign. The room was filled with a collective pool of talent that was a force to be reckoned with. Together we had the ability to film, write, plan events, build, design, strategize, engineer, program— we could make anything.
It was my job to keep all of these amazing people on track while making sure it didn’t feel like an exercise in drudgery. I’d like to say I figured out some magical recipe for making that happen, but the truth is that great things happen when great people get together. All I had to do was provide small prompts in the form of questions, and before I could even finish my sentences ideas would be flying in all directions.
At some point we’ve all been part of a group that lacks excitement for the task at hand. When that happens getting to the goal feels like pulling teeth. That night I realized that the best way to make something great is to find great people, put them in a room, and let them do their thing.
Over the next 5 months we worked together to create a campaign that touched on the exact reason why were doing this: because we love to make things — and a notebook is the crux of making.
