RBG Goes To Anacostia

On a chilly day in October, I was pedaling my bike around Washington, D.C., and checking out the street art. I was in Anacostia when, to my delight, I found the watery blue eyes of Ruth Bader Ginsburg staring back at me from the side of a bank. I pulled over into a vacant lot of sand and pebbles, took in the mural, and paid my respects. Just a few weeks earlier, the Supreme Court justice had been lying in state under the Capitol dome.

Ginsburg, the Notorious RBG, has become such a cultural icon that her distinctive face has popped up in street art everywhere. The Anacostia mural is not the only RBG mural in D.C. There is a larger, more famous RBG mural in D.C.’s U Street corridor that was painted while the Supreme Court justice was still alive. You can check it out here.

Still, as I stood two miles east of the Capitol Building, I wondered: What is she doing here?
