Lab-grown meat may allow us to get creative with our meat

Yes, literally. Let’s play with the idea that you could go to the grocery store and buy meat made of the various body parts of Elon Musk, Leonardo DiCaprio, or Beyonce. What if you could grab 300 grams of DiCaprio, go home, fry it, and serve it with a side of potato wedges, a nice salad, and a splash of bearnaise sauce? Would you do it?

This idea is not as strange or unrealistic as you might imagine. Many companies are making significant progress on lab-grown meat, and while there are no companies that I am aware of that are growing meat from humans at present, there is no scientific limitation for doing so.

According to Vow Foods, just four animals (0.02% of our options) make up almost all of the meat that we eat. Yet, they argue, it’s unlikely that those four animals are the best of all the choices available. With modern technologies, it’s possible to harmlessly extract cells from any animal (no matter how large or small), which can then be multiplied indefinitely and turned into meat.

Lab-grown meat is a scary concept for a lot of people, so it’s unlikely that companies making such products will be selling anything too exotic or wild, to begin with. It might be easier to ease people into the idea of…
