Turtle / Penguin Sculpture for Valentines Day 2019
1 Day Build Idea for Digital Fabrication Nerds
It has been a while since I made anything. Compared to the Daft Punk helmet I’ve made during Halloween of 2018, this was a lot simpler. In my Rhino 3d class at CCSF, I was teaching students to unroll solids that they had produced digitally so they can print it out and fold them back together. So I decide to build something like a demo for my class.
Polygonal animals were modeled based on a simple line drawing of a turtle and penguin that I had developed years ago. To keep it simple and as a low -poly model with minimal surfaces as this had to be hand cut (as I did not have time to book the laser cutter). Also, I was thinking ahead on the scale of the objects and how difficult it would be to glue all small pieces together.
Once modeled, it was unrolled into pieces and nested onto 3 sheets of 8.5x11 cardstock. It was printed, cut, glued, and assembled within 2 hours. Not my cleanest build but no matter.
It took another few hours to spray down the entire thing using tons of tape to separate between the colors during each spray session. I only had 3 colors of spray paint: Silver, Gold, and Black. I was playing around with textures by the black Plastidip to create bumps. I would spray chunks of plastidip, then gold or silver on top. “Short controlled burst” is the way to go (according to Ripley or Hicks). It worked well enough!
Here are the results:
