At one point or another, we have all felt a bit homesick: whether we are away on a trip, studying abroad, or even just a few hours from home. The feeling can be upsetting and uncomfortable, leaving many desperate for relief. Here are six remedies to help combat anxiety and stress when abroad.

  1. GET OUT AND MEET NEW PEOPLE.

Sometimes, just getting out in a new city or town can change your perspective, and be a good distraction from the homesick feelings you may be experiencing. Plus, you might just make a new friend! While this can certainly be a daunting endeavor, it is liberating to go outside your comfort zone. Wallowing inside your apartment all day won’t change anything, so go out and explore!

2. CONTINUE YOUR ROUTINE.

Being away from home can trigger stress and anxiety, and one great way of alleviating both is by establishing a daily routine. If you have a specific routine and pattern of doing things back home; carry it with you wherever you go. That way, things won’t seem so out of place.

3. REACH OUT TO THE PEOPLE YOU MISS.

Not being surrounded by people you have spent the majority of your days with can be scary and new. Luckily, with the growing presence of social media in our lives, far away friends and family don’t seem so far away. Send your loved ones a text message or chat on Facebook. They most likely miss you too and will be ecstatic to hear from you.

4. JOURNALING.

One of the most therapeutic cures for homesickness is journaling. According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, journaling greatly benefits overall mental health and can help you recognize worries and fears that may be triggering your anxiety. So, grab a notebook and pen, and reflect on your journey from home to your new destination.

5. FIND SOMETHING THAT REMINDS YOU OF HOME.

Sometimes, we just need a symbol of home to help us through a period of change. Keeping little mementos from home can help you feel less alone and remind you that your home and those you love most are always with you. This could be something as simple as a picture or souvenir item.

6. EXCHANGE SMALL GIFTS.

Gifting can be a perfect way to show friends and family back home that you are thinking of them. Or, if you have a loved one abroad; send them a care package to let them know you are thinking of them. Giftpack offers gifts that can be at their door within three hours.

Homesickness is not forever. It is temporary and completely normal! So, do not fear if this is something you are experiencing. You are not alone in this battle.
