As I mentioned in a recent prospectus for another report (one focused on collaborative whiteboards, which I am now calling workboards), my research agenda has been upended by the coronavirus pandemic:

Earlier in the year, I had laid out a series of reports that would have led me to dig deeply into people operations technologies (the department formerly known as human resources). However, despite my continuing interest, the coronavirus and the wholesale shift to working from home (WFH) has shifted priorities for everybody and led to a reordering of my near-term research agenda.

Therefore I am kicking off research leading to reports on intranets, the internally-oriented software solutions that serve a number of complementary purposes: internal communications, both from the company to employees and between employees; access to company information repositories; and an interface to enterprise applications.

I lifted the subtitle above — internal websites that help employees get stuff done — from the folks at Thoughtfarmer, one of the companies I will be surveying. This layman’s definition is suitably amorphous. Of necessity, intranets can be thought of serving many potentially divergent goals. The CEO wants to be able to reinforce company culture…
