Building off of our recent SOC 2 Type II certification announcement, we’re thrilled to share that GlobaliD is now HIPAA compliant.

What’s HIPAA?

Here’s the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services:

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) required the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop regulations protecting the privacy and security of certain health information.1 To fulfill this requirement, HHS published what are commonly known as the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the HIPAA Security Rule.

In short, HIPAA compliance is about keeping your healthcare data (Protected Health Information or PHI) private and secure. (You can learn more about the Privacy and Security Rules in the HHS links above.)

More than keeping that data safe, it’s also about safeguarding who has access to it — while preserving certain individual rights such as the ability to obtain records or request corrections. That’s the kind of stuff that GlobaliD is perfectly suited for. By design, only you get to decide who has access to your data, which you alone own and control at all times.

So all of this should be no surprise to our users or partners given GlobaliD’s ongoing commitment to privacy and security.

Achieving HIPAA compliance is also an important milestone for us because of the many compelling use cases for self-sovereign identity and verifiable credentials that involve your health — some of which we’ve been actively working on behind the scenes. (Stay tuned!)

The pandemic has been a boon for telehealth and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center CEO Michael Fisher believes it could make up to as much as 30 percent of all hospital visits in the near future, according to a recent interview with McKinsey. Their hospital system saw telehealth visits soar to 5,000 per week compared to 2,000 for all of 2019.

Meanwhile, airlines and other businesses are looking to the U.S. and other governments to spearhead health credentials in an effort to transition society back to a semblance of normalcy.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

GlobaliD’s HIPAA compliance positions our platform as a portable solution for those needs — one that allows you, the individual, to maintain ownership and control of your sensitive healthcare data.
