~~ Shaping our City’s Future ~~

  • Bellandur Lake

Challenge: Evaluate your city’s preparedness for the #4IR and make recommendations in areas that could improve your city’s readiness for change. What will it take to build cities of the future in which everyone can live and thrive?

Problem : Bangalore, once the city of beautiful lakes is now the city of burning lakes. Rapid pollution from industries and non-treated sewage water has left one of Bangalore’s largest lakes — Bellandur lake, in a pathetic situation. Almost 40% of the city’s catchment area empties into this one lake. Lack of enforcement of strict rules due to non-availability of real time data to catch polluting culprits is a main concern for the lack of action taken by government bodies. This urgent matter has been taken by citizen groups to the The National Green Tribunal, which handles matters related to environment degradation.

Ongoing work : Our Hub is adopting a two-pronged approach -

  • Work towards empowering activists, who have taken the government to the highest environmental court in the country, with additional data support to strengthen their case against government agencies that regularly churn out false reports on the pollution , PH level and sources of pollution of the lake
  • Work towards bringing solutions from startups we have already engaged with, to implement their solutions such as ‘Real Time Data Tracking of Effluents’. We hope to soon start a new citizen movement in the city towards setting up of micro sewage treatment plants (mSTP) at all residential and commercial centres and provide the government with an opportunity to live track through a dashboard, common effluents leaving each of these micro STPs

The issue of pollution of Bellandur lake (approx. 919 acres) is a major concern to residents and offices in the busy Bellandur area of fast-growing Bangalore. Tackling the solution through effective use of low cost arduino boards and IOT equipped devices and providing the government with enough know-how to tackle and fix the issue of pollution at source; is our effort to give back to our city.

  • Data Analytics

Approximately 16 lakh sq km of government land has been encroached upon across the state of Karnataka and approximately only 2 lakh sq km has been recovered by the government.

Proposed Solution: Use of satellite-based imaging combined with a comparison of current government maps can help identify these land holdings.

  • Samudaya

Civic participation amongst youth (ages 18–45) in countries like India is low not because of citizen apathy, but due to the lack of access to information in a manner that’s intuitive to a millennial’s mind. The vast amount of information is to be marshalled into a form that’s digestible to the youth, and via a medium they’re familiar with.

This lead the Global Shapers Bangalore chapter to develop Samudāya.

Samudāya consist of a Facebook Messenger Bot programmed to answer any queries anyone may have on voting, including what a Voter ID is, how to apply for one, the procedure, where the closest poll booth is, etc. It runs several AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) models which gives us in depth analytics in what the most common questions voters have, which in turn can help inform any efforts by the Government or social groups to increase civic participation.

~~ Shaping Education in India ~~

  • STEM Education / Computer literacy training / Learn to Code

We are working towards implementing an unique learn to code curriculum by working closely with other educators in our network. The next step is to pilot at Hippocampus. Hippocampus runs primary and secondary schools in semi-urban and rural communities. Most of their current centres have computer labs and there is interest to for STEM-based practical learning for students.

~~ Community Outreach ~~

Offering mentorship and support to young social entrepreneurs in the city that are working towards creating a positive change.

Three million units — that is the reality of blood shortage in our country according to a 2012 World Health Organization (WHO) report. With a population of 1.2 billion, it is a shame that we are falling short of the required 3 million blood units annually. Lack of awareness and incorrect information or myths around blood donation in India are cited as the main reasons behind this shortfall.

It is this gap that a Bangalore-based organization called Khoon is trying to bridge. From a population of around 40–50 crore young people, if only 1–2 % start donating regularly, this shortage can be eradicated.F

Started back in 2016, Khoon has impacted 50K+ lives and is operating across India.

“When I was 15 years old, about 3 years ago, Amidst the severe water crisis we were facing in Bangalore, there was a shocking bit of data I came across — 14 million litres of water is wasted every year simply in the water that we leave behind in glasses at restaurants. This number left me numb. I knew I had to do something. This led me to start my own social initiative cum non-profit — Why Waste? which aims at changing the mindset of people towards natural resources.-specially water. We primarily work at saving water in restaurants in all possible ways there specifically the water left behind in glasses.

A simple methodology we came up with at why waste is A half marked glass- A glass with a half mark half way through it in the form of a sticker. This acts as an indication to fill the glass only half so you start learning to take only as much as you need. It also carries an inspirational quote which tells you the importance of the water that you are holding in your hand and it’s as if that water is talking to you. This methodology has seen a behavioural change in people towards water in all aspects of their lives which is probably our biggest achievement.

We have reached out to 1000’s of people through our events, workshops and talks at schools, colleges and offices.

I believe that there is no ultimate method or service or product which can save water. It is the combination of the collection of all the small different ways along with — and most importantly the effort of every single individual to become more conscious and stop wasting water in the most trivial ways we tend to. Through change.org I have started a petition to reach out to the National Restaurants Authority of India to get this implemented across restaurants in the country. Having already roped in several youth icons to take this forward, we need help from you and your associates to support us in the petition called ‘Let’s see the #glasshalffull’. This also hopes to motivate people to bring about a lifestyle change before we turn into the next Cape Town.”

Do you have what it takes to be a changemaker and help shape the future of Bangalore !?
