The Shopify Basic plan is the second tier in the hierarchy of plans that Shopify has to offer. The first tier, the Lite Plan, is the cheapest plan and is broken down in detail in my blog post here. Today, we’ll dive into the Basic plan to see what features it has and how it differs from the Lite plan. First things first — the Lite plan will run you $9 USD a month, while the Basic plan is $29 USD a month.

There is a ton of overlap between Shopify plans since they all come with at least eleven of the same features. This is why it’s important to make sure you are investing in the Shopify plan most suitable for your own needs, because you very well may be totally fine on the cheapest plan as it has so many of the features that even the most expensive plan — the Plus, comes with. So do your research, but rest assured knowing that you can change your plan anytime and very easily with Shopify. I’ve broken down each feature that is included in all plans in my blog highlighting the Lite plan, so head over there to learn more about them.

For a quick once-over, I’ve listed all of the primary features below:

FEATURES

  • Unlimited Products
  • Unlimited Bandwidth and Online Storage
  • Shopify POS and Card Readers
  • Manual Order Creation
  • Discount Codes
  • Overview Dashboard
  • Fraud Analysis
  • Finance Reports
  • Abandoned Cart Recovery

SHOPIFY BASIC FEATURES

The biggest leap from the Lite to Basic plan is that with the Basic plan, you now have your own online store. The Lite plan is meant for those who want the ability to sell their product without worrying about maintaining an online store. If you require an online store, you will want to look into the Basic plan or higher. Having an online store on the Shopify platform allows you to showcase your products however you want and gives you the ability to customize those products in a large variety of ways (eg. tags, filters, variants, etc), among other awesome features.

Shopify has a built-in theme editor so that you can have control over basic settings in your store like fonts, colours, layouts, and images. You won’t need to know how to code but if you have access to a developer (like me!), you will have way more opportunities to get your website looking exactly like how you imagine it to be. A developer can do this by coding your website in a way that makes settings dynamic and easily able to be passed off to a non-developer to use. This is done using Shopify Liquid, Shopify’s very own custom templating language, and can open up so many cool features and dynamic components to your website if you know how to use it or can hire someone to work on the coding side of things for you (shameless plug here — if you do need a freelance developer who specializes in Shopify, get in touch with me!)

Along with an online store comes the ability to add up to twenty themes onto your account. Utilizing this feature will allow you to test a new theme out without worrying about messing around with your live store, keep various themes of your website so you can switch them out at the drop of a hat, or test new features without actually making them live immediately. Shopify Basic also comes equipped with a built-in blogging engine so you can have your own blog live directly on your website.

The Shopify Basic plan and higher comes included with an SSL certificate in order to create a safe connection between a server and browser to ensure your customers private information is safe and secure. You can also access a variety of reports including finance, behaviour, acquisition, and marketing reports to better help you understand your customers shopping behaviour.

Those are the major highlights of the Shopify Basic plan, as well as how it differs from Shopify Lite. The third tier in Shopify’s pricing structure is simply called the “Shopify Plan”, and I will dive into that in the next couple of weeks.
