With Sea of Thieves Season 5, a brand new feature has come to the game that has long been daydreamed about: you can bury your own treasure and hide it for later. There’s a lot of unique new systems built around this feature, and this Guide will break it all down for you so you can be a Treasure Burying expert in no time.

How to Bury Treasure

Once you’ve acquired treasure items in game, you can place that item over any diggable spot of land and get ready to bury it, if you so desire. These treasures may include chests, trinkets, skulls, gunpowder barrels, merchant goods (besides live animals), and more. All you’ve now got to do is pull out your shovel and while facing the treasure, use the new secondary action button to bury it. It takes several digging motions to become fully buried.

Once an item is buried, you’ll automatically receive an X Marks the Spot map in your Quest inventory, marked with a unique symbol to signify that it is one of your own created maps. Now you can see exactly where you buried something, in case you want to dig it up again later!
Note: If you bury something in a cave or underground, the X on the Map will be circled to signify it’s not at the top most surface

Map Bundles

Once you’ve created one or more original Maps in your inventory, a new item will appear on your Voyage Table- a Map Bundle. This is a physical item that can be picked up by any member of your crew, or even a sneaky member of another pirate crew!

  • If you remove the Map Bundle from your table, you will no longer have the maps in your inventory, until you return the Map Bundle to the voyage table
  • You can then put this bundle wherever you want, perhaps you will hide it, or even graciously gift it to another crew!
  • You can even steal a Map Bundle from another crew’s table, and then put it on your own table, allowing you to now see those maps and dig up those treasures!
  • If a ship sinks, any maps they had created will float to the surface of the wreckage in the Map Bundle

The Quest Board

Located on the dock at each Outpost, there is a new fixture called the Quest Board. This is a place where user created maps, along with game generated maps, can be claimed by any crews allowing that crew to go dig up treasure at those noted locations.

  • In the Quest Board’s menu, you can look at the voyages that have been posted and choose to take up to 5 maps per in-game day. Now you can choose exactly which islands you want to visit!
  • More importantly, any player can also choose to donate their own Map to the Quest board, after they have buried any number of treasures. Any other crew that reads the board can then take that map and go dig up those treasures!
Note: in order to donate your maps, your Map Bundle must be on your Voyage Table! Some maps are not allowed to be posted, including Maps of Outposts
  • If another crew digs up YOUR treasures from the Quest Board, YOU will receive the Same Rewards that you would’ve if you had just sold the treasure yourself- plus a bonus amount of Seasonal Renown
  • Those rewards will reach you even if you leave the session before the Quest is completed. You’ll be notified of your rewards the next time you log in to Sea of Thieves! If nobody completes your voyage before a server eventually shuts down, you’ll receive a smaller amount of Renown as consolation

Commendations and Rewards

Pirates that check the Reputation Tab of their Pirate Log, under Bilge Rats may notice a brand new bundle of Commendations to complete, all centered around new features from Season 5. Many of these involve what we’ve discussed about burying treasure, managing Map Bundles, and interacting with the Quest Board, and completing these unlocks unique cosmetics for sale in the Outpost Shops.

Head on over to our Guide to Buried Treasures Commendations for a breakdown of these challenges and how best to complete them!
