April was good, but probably not great if I’m honest.

Have to set that right in May.

These are my missions for this month – a bunch of simple tasks or challenges to be completed every single day.

The Missions

Every day in May I will:

Wake up at 5:41am. Same as the last 5 months. Not breaking the chain now.

Go for a long walk after getting up. Still following my standard route which is 4.6km (2.9mi) and it takes about 40mins.

Do 80 push-ups. Bumped this up from 60 in April and will primarily knock these off with sets of 15–20 reps throughout the day (ideally before 12pm though). Next stop is 100 every day but 80 in May feels good.

Do a mobility & stretching routine for 15mins. My general mobility and flexibility, especially in my legs and hips, hasn’t been great for a long time. It’s something I’ve been meaning to work on and I think I’ve found a way to weave it into my morning routine. The goal is to make it an ongoing habit afterthis month.

Complete all 3 activity rings on my Apple Watch. This has really just been happening by starting the day with the top two missions. Feeling the need to stretch myself this month though, so going to bump up the daily Move goal by around 10% (to 3260 kJ or 780 calories).

Read a physical book for at least 30mins. This is now another non-negotiable habit for me that I really enjoy. I’ve got some great books lined up ready for May and can’t wait to get into them.

Write in a logbook about the previous day. I’ve been doing this daily journaling (in the form of a logbook style) since February and making adjustments each month. In May I’m going to keep this up every day and probably add some more structure compared to last month.

No iPhone, iPad or computer usage before 10am. This feels a little nuts to be committing to but I feel confident that I can put the right things in place to stick to it. The main goal is to get my days started on a really positive note and to be super-intentional about what I do for those few hours.

Listen to a new podcast. I love listening to podcasts and have built a good set of regulars. I’m trying to branch out a bit more so decided I would find podcasts I hadn’t listened to before and listen to at least 1 episode (depending on length). How I’m going to pick these new podcasts will be a bit random but generally I’m looking for highly-rated ones that have interesting topics or guests that I wouldn’t normally seek out.

During May I’m again continuing with a couple of other good practices too:

Intermittent fasting. I’m now a few months into this practice and I really love it. I feel more focussed in the late morning having not eaten breakfast (except black coffee), plus fasting has a lot of health benefits. Aiming to knock off at least one full 24hr fast in May too.

Eating meat or fish in only 1 meal a day (dinner). Will again be keeping this up in May although not too fussed if I skip a day or two.

So with May now all planned out…let’s go.

‘Missions’ is a special project I started in December 2017. Little daily challenges, completed every month. Here’s what I’ve done:
