The Music I Never Played

But I Recreated in the Sincerest Words of My Soul

Non-members can read the story HERE.

As a child, I had two dreams — to become a writer and to become… a pianist. I was often told I had beautiful long fingers like a pianist.

Indeed, music always captivated me in a magnetic way and transported me to unknown worlds, just like literature.

I remember the day my parents decided to sign me up for private English lessons. They told me that there was meaning in learning a foreign language and I would find a good job afterward. However, there were also solfege and piano lessons at the same school. There was even a piano in the English room, which I looked at with admiration but also with sadness. Because I didn’t know how to press its keys properly. I was not the chosen one to learn the language of music. It was painful to hear how others practiced playing while I was learning English.

To this day I admire people who can play musical instruments, especially the piano. For me, this music expresses the most tender part of my soul. Listening to it is a real pleasure, inspiration, and therapy.

It is the music I listen to most often while writing. Through it, I am transported back to the time when I was a child. And if now I can only press the keys on the computer keyboard to express what I feel, behind that pressing is my unfulfilled childhood dream of becoming a pianist. I often imagine how while I am typing I am actually playing and the magical melody in my ears is actually the voice of the words coming out on the screen.

My favourite composer and pianist is the Italian Ludovico Einaudi, who I can boldly say composed the soundtrack of my heart — the music that makes me shiver, cry, rejoice, and feel alive. I am grateful that there is someone who can express what I cannot. I can’t even describe in a thousand words what his music means to me. I have received so much inspiration. I have written so many poems and stories while listening to his compositions.

Through the song I share in this story, I want to welcome all the new writers who have agreed to be a part of this writing community. Thank you for your trust! I hope to create a place where warmth, continuity, and inspiration can be felt.

I’d love for you to share in a comment if you have a favorite music and artist that inspires you to write. And do you have an unfulfilled childhood dream that you keep thinking about to this day?
