I wasn’t looking forward to reading A Family of Liars by E. Lockhart, the recent prequel to her very famous book We Were Liars, all that much. Or at all, really, because even though the first book was a New York Times bestseller and some kind of TikTok phenomenon, whatever that is, it came out over eight years ago. I only remember it because SPOILER. Plus, these books are Young Adult, and I have half a graduate degree and have belonged to several book clubs. I prefer more sophisticated fare, which is, of course, books written for grown-ups that don’t involve fantasy worlds with made up names or dragons or fairies or SPOILERS.

But this new book is far better than Lockhart’s first, because though it has SPOILERS it also has one really great character. A grown-up, it goes without saying. She is the reason this is a five-star read and hardly seems like YA at all.

In most YA novels, mothers named Tipper who excel at planning meals and cooking are probably not designed to be held in high regard. In Family of Liars, however, Tipper Taft Sinclair is queen of the island her stinking rich family owns and summers on each, ah, summer. Those squabbling YA daughters of hers with…
