The semester is almost over, and you may be thinking about a new place to rest your head. Then don’t sleep on these essential reads from the Griz Renter Blog. We have a lot of great posts to help you protect yourself, find a place, and tie up loose ends at your old place.

First thing’s first: determine whether you can really move right now. If you’re a freshman in the dorms, find out if you’re eligible to move out. And if you’re thinking about breaking a lease, proceed with caution.

Know your rights

Don’t count on your landlord, your roommate, or anyone else to respect your rights, or even know what they are. Unfortunately, many apartment hunters and renters in Missoula face discrimination.

Check out our article on discrimination and this video with Montana Fair Housing’s Pam Bean.

Are you moving with assistance animals or pets? We have posts about them, too!

Where to look

OK, OK! Let’s start searching already.

Be sure to check out our Housing Finder web app for rental listings and roommate profiles. The app is pretty intuitive, but you can find help here.

Need more ideas? Another post details more places to search for housing.

Your old rental

Once you’ve found your dream home (or at least something that will work), be sure to leave your old place in a way that protects your security deposit.

You can avoid a couple of common security deposit deductions by getting rid of your stuff in a responsible way and knowing when the landlord can charge for carpet cleaning.

We’re here to help

Moving can be a daunting process, but the ASUM Renter Center is here to help. If you need help with any of these issues or anything we didn’t address, contact us and schedule an appointment on our website.
