Monetization is always a hard and “squeezing”(process of generating juice from fruit) question. Especially for a guy like me. The reason why I publishing this story is that because I’m angry.

And when I got common questions, that is important but very common — I’m going wild.

Like how I suppose to answer that question?

Let me rephrase:

  • Can you tell me what is your purpose in life?
  • Can you describe your feelings about being part of the Universe with age 13.8 billion years?

Let me rephrase:

What is the monetization model of Amazon? Online shopping? or maybe AWS generate 30% of whole revenue?

While Amazon Web Services remains a relatively small segment of Amazon’s business in terms of net sales, it accounts for a huge portion of Amazon’s profits. AWS net sales came to $5.44 billion for the quarter and delivered operating income of $1.4 billion. The segment’s net sales grew year-over-year 49 percent.

I hope you understand my point.

Ok, let’s begin an article with some answers. All points below is only my assumptions. If I know how to sell it right now — you wouldn’t be able to read this article.

how can be monetized our code?

A) We have a lot of unfinished but code with intersections. Each stuff can be sell/drive cash differently.

B) We can be acquired at some point of time(but I don’t rely on it right now)

How to generate money from open source projects?

Emmm, what did you hear about Kickstarters-like options?

We have an API…

How to sell API as a service? Did recipe APIs go well? check this list of recipe APIs and find an answer: https://medium.com/groceristar/companies-with-recipe-apis-e9f29a64389c

Where to sell/promote: https://rapidapi.com/search/recipe

  • It can be sold as API(when they grab our data or use our methods),
  • I also assume it can be used similarly to branching logic(they want to set up an API on their own server, etc). the second version was adopted by Atlassian when they sell online Jira and offline Jira.
  • if an API doesn’t have some features, but someone wants it — it can be an additional source of income too. Our major goal for API is a structure. But someone needs to connect this API with an app in some sadistic ways…
  • API works with the database. and database of recipes is always a debatable thing. maybe we can sell just schema, I don’t know. but it can save time for projects that just started.

Meal planning service

Don’t know what is it? Read: https://medium.com/groceristar/what-is-meal-planning-62a950f89036

Usually, it’s a Saas with recurring fees.
Side income can be generated from selling cookbooks(aka printed version of recipe collections), selling kitchen tools from partners(aka Amazon affiliates), any types of deals, selling ads…

HAY(How) to sell software.

  • You can pack it on zip archive and sell at Gumroad
  • or you can be stupid and sell code at the competitive marketplace(not judging, but …)
  • you can offer a basic version for free, but if people want nice software updates, support, etc- they can buy a premium pack.

Why our stuff right now is free? I don’t want to explore stuff like payments, licensing, etc. I just want to code…

As proof of concept, we’re making our own web-projects that using our own software. it can make cash too.

application
our own application similar to the web version.
But people that selling recipe apps re-inventing the wheel all the time: https://github.com/ChickenKyiv/awesome-recipe-app-templates

A lot of people that didn’t part of the “food code projects” doesn’t know how much was done before. BUT! there is a problem — a lot of stuff outdated, not maintained, overcomplicated, etc.
Details here https://github.com/ChickenKyiv/awesome-food-open-source/blob/master/README.md
or here https://github.com/ChickenKyiv/awesome-recipe-websites (Yes, it’s not formatted — I don’t care)

Integration of our tools services into existing projects?

I don’t want to be part of it, but it can work too.

  • emm, a job board for food-project developers aka build and sell your community
  • affiliate marketing by promoting food creators?
  • win some prizes? (No, I’m stupid, but I have a team)

Code that we’re building now is evolving quickly and generate some unpredictable things. I’m sure that in 3 months I’ll change my mind about a lot of ways that I specify here.

end.

If you reach the end — please clap. it’s important for me — because when at least 10 different people clap — Medium platform will start to promote this article and I’ll get a good number of views.
