Why you won’t find Groove posting on social media

We’ve been number crunching:

💡 The average human lives just over 38 million minutes, or 72.6 years. This human also spends an average of 145 minutes a day on social media. If they start using social media at 15 years old, that’s 3,048,480 minutes, or 5.8 years in a lifetime. That’s around 8% of our lives spent on social media.

How does that make you feel? Gotta be honest, for us, it’s a little scary.

Social media can do a lot of good: building and growing businesses, providing access to resources, connecting distant friends and family, and plain old entertaining.

But, from our perspective as a community built on authentic human connection, social media today feels like it’s pushing us increasingly away from the types of connections that excite us most.

Creating Groove has helped us realize the value of time — our ritual of 50 minute work sessions power our growing coworking community to accomplish great things like writing books, starting businesses from the ground up, or setting aside dedicated time to rest, meditate or learn. One of our core beliefs is that being intentional with our time and energy is a key to a fulfilling life.

Be discriminating about what images and ideas you permit into your mind. If you yourself don’t choose what thoughts and images you expose yourself to, someone else will. — Epictetus

Practically speaking: we’re a small team and we can’t be everywhere at once. Anyone who has run a social media account knows that it can take a lot of time, especially with the new push to video and ever-increasing features. When we dug deep, we realized we wanted to create longer form, enriching content and experiences for our community. Content that helps people on wavy career paths (solopreneurs, freelancers, creatives) thrive and find support from others.

In order to do that, Groove will be taking a break from posting on these channels:

  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • Snapchat

You’ll still see us chatting with Groovers and participating in the overall future of work conversation via DMs and comments; we’ll be taking a step back from posting to our feeds, so we can focus on creating longer form content elsewhere.

We’re gonna get vulnerable for a sec: Other brands that aren’t on social media, like Lush and Tesla, have been inspirations for us, but this is kind of a new world for a new brand like us.

Just like it can be scary for Groovers to embark on their wavy career paths and rethink how they are spending their time (and ultimately, life), we’re also a little scared to take this step and try something new. That’s why we’re approaching it as an experiment to learn from.

Looking to the future ⤵️

Here on our Medium, we’ll be sharing thoughts and ideas on a regular basis that will be easy-to-read and easy-to-implement to make your WFH life a little more groovy. These will take the form of:

~Team Dispatches:

Members of the Groove team will riff on topics of the moment, share what’s on their mind, and speak to their most recent challenges and success at work and beyond. You’re invited to share your experience with us, too 💌

  • Co-Founder and CEO Josh Greene is exploring merging peer support networks, what it means to build a healthy organization, and ancient wisdom shaping modern technology
  • Co-Founder and Chief Design Officer Tova Safra is writing about using time more mindfully, humane interactions and technology, and making time and headspace for creative pursuits
  • Head of Community Taylor Harrington is covering authentic human connection, community and work book reviews, and lessons from leading a community

~ Roundtable Responses:

We’ll select a topic related to the future of work, and Josh, Tova and Taylor will give their take on it. Our team lives all around the world and brings a wide array of life experiences to the work Groove does. With a little editorial help from our marketing team (Hi ☺️), we’ll bring you a global view on the hottest WFH tea.

~ Solopreneur Toolkits:
