Circular picks, June 17
Hello again!
Another month, another bunch of music for your listening pleasure. Last month we brought you Chronixx, Young Kye, Oasis, dvsn, and more for Circular picks, May 17.
Here’s to another instalment 🚀
As expected, we’ve had another month of new music that could become classics in years to come. Projects from Denai Moore, H.E.R., SZA, PARTYNEXTDOOR, DJ Khaled, Vince Staples, Lorde, alt-J, Dua Lipa, and loaaaaaaaaads more. (Honestly.)
But, of course we are loving some oldies too! Let’s get into some tracks picked this month.
Magnolia
Typically I (Hendrix) frown upon this kind of music and I struggle enjoying it. I don’t know why I spent so long not enjoying it. Whilst Playboi Carti is lyrically atrocious, the instrumental bangs and ends up bringing the vocals together well enough to make something that is a complete bop.
Rain Come Down
What a guy. Vince Staples not only drops endless gems in interviews, but his music is incredible too. His new album Big Fish Theory has numerous tracks worthy of making the playlist, but Rain Come Down tops them (for me) so far.
Revenge
XXXTentacion gets near nothing but bad press due to all of the crimes he’s been tied-up in; that’s not stopped him gaining a crazy cult-like following online. There’s no significant body of work — aside from the Revenge project that is some kind of mashup of past releases. While many of those randomly released tracks lack amazing production value, there are a few gems buried amongst them. I think his melodic tracks are far better than his rapping/rock-heavy ones.
Rotten & Voltage
Dot Rotten recently appeared on Rinse FM after a hiatus of sorts, and well it was a bit crazy. Dot has always been one of my favourite MCs but coupled with his production talent, he’s right up in the Top 5 (easily!). This particular track has a golden instrumental.
