Where are my Gold Backed Tokens?

Update : Wee Chuan of Etherscan contacted me with another way of checking and updating your token balance which I have added at the end of this post. Thanks again to Etherscan for this.

Previously when the Token Sale was started, we wrote a simple guide on checking your HGT balance. Little did we know that we would have to redo a different set of steps for the GBT too!

A lot of complicated thinking went into the design of HelloGold’s Gold Backed Token. We had to ensure that tokens could be allocated quickly and accurately no matter how many HGT holders there are. As a result, no transfer events occur when the bonus GBT are allocated (we get to save on tons of Gas, yay!)

On the flipside, it appears that some wallets do not manage to track GBT very well. We will soon deploy a means of checking your balance from the HelloGold.org web page. In the meantime, here is a quick guide on how to check your GBT balance:

These two methods work ALL the time

A. Check the GBT contract on Etherscan

  1. Go to the GBT “Read Smart Contract” page
  2. Enter your wallet address in row 9 (balanceOf) and click the Query button — you should see something like this:
Getting the GBT balance from etherscan’s GBT page

Note: The number shown will be be in fractions of a GBT. There are 18 decimal places (e.g. 257274054777242 means 0.000257274054777242 GBT)

B. Check MyEtherWallet

If you have a hardware wallet or are in control of your keys, MyEtherWallet will show you your GBT balance.

  1. Go to MyEtherWallet (the real one!)
  2. Select Send Ether and Tokens and open your wallet
  3. Click on Load Token Balances
  4. Click on Show Tokens. Your GBT balance will be shown when it is loaded.
first loading…. and then
the balances are loaded one by one… and up pops GBT.

Using Blockchain Explorers

The following two methods work if you have recently transferred tokens into or out of your account. To test that, we sent 0 GBT to the same account. The action of receiving the transfer event causes the block explorers to realise that you have these coins and update the balance.

An odd thing to do but we did it with a gas price of 1 GWei….

C. Ethplorer — updated balance available

It seems that once Ethplorer is aware of the existence of GBT in your account, it will check your GBT balance each time you make the request. This means that the balance shown will include any charged management fees and recent GBT bonus allocations.

IMPORTANT: Due to the above, the balance you see on Ethplorer is the accurate one compared to Etherscan

Ethplorer has them now!

D. Etherscan’s account page (may not be latest balance)

This is the page you get when you enter your account’s address in the search box. What we have to remember is that Etherscan works by analysing blockchain entries.

The account page shows a little box with your tokens. For Etherscan it shows your balance at time of last transfer. For most tokens this is perfectly fine but GBT may have new allocations and will certainly have incurred management fees.

At the time of writing, Etherscan does not check the account balance at the moment you make the request.

Check Etherscan for your account balance. You just enter your address into the search box and, in the drop list with the tokens you will see:

And look!!!! Here are our GBT now :-)

UPDATE

Wee Chuan of Etherscan pointed out this way of checking your GBT balance :

https://etherscan.io/token/0x7585F835ae2d522722d2684323a0ba83401f32f5?a=YOUR_ADDRESS

This tells you the current GBT value AND adds GBT to your token list.

So, to check the account of our dear friend Alice :

https://etherscan.io/token/0x7585F835ae2d522722d2684323a0ba83401f32f5?a=0x31EFd75bc0b5fbafc6015Bd50590f4fDab6a3F22

Which shows :

E. Other wallets

Mist

To add tokens to Mist you need to add custom tokens just as you did for HGT.
The contract address is 0x7585F835ae2d522722d2684323a0ba83401f32f5.

ImToken

We have communicated with the imToken team on adding GBT to the wallet and will update as soon as we receive confirmation from them.

Parity

Parity currently does not support GBT. We hope to resolve this soon.

Footnote:

I would like to thank you all for supporting HelloGold and our mission to help ordinary people get access to the kind of savings that were previously only available to the affluent.

Whatever your reasons were, please tell others about our mission at HelloGold and encourage people to give us a try.
