Welcome to the first day of Black History Month! Let’s take a moment to recap some of the great things that were done in January by black people.

Now that January is finallyyy behind us, it’s time to get your New Year’s resolutions back in order, if they’ve gone astray, and gear up for a very important month! The team at Her Outlette is super excited to celebrate Black History Month with all of you. We want to take this first day to shout out some of the major accomplishments that are setting the stage for a prosperous 2019. I’m rooting for everybody BLACK, and I said what I said.

If we don’t uplift each other then who will???

Live out your dreams,

Monet Victoria

Black Panther

Rikkiej: No the movie did not come out in January 2019, but it is racking up nominations and awards. This is really bringing some inspiration into my 2019. Not only has Black Panther secured outstanding performance by an ensemble in a motion picture at the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, but it has made history as the first Superhero film to score best picture nomination for the Oscars. Black. Excellence.

Most Diverse Congress in US History

Meliabia: 2019 has welcomed the most diverse Congress in US History. This 116th congress has 102 women in their seats (previously had 87). We officially have the first ever Muslim women in congress, two as a matter of fact. We also have the first two Native-American women in congress. This is huge and shows the direction America is headed in to become great! More women of color than ever have been elected into the house. Now, if only we can keep our government from shutting down again.

Year of the Woman

Kellé Whitney: Women are not playin’ this year and are here to make change! Senator Kamala Harris of California formally launched her 2020 presidential campaign. I am living for this and can’t wait to see how the upcoming presidential race will unfold, and of course the #blackgirlmagic.

Missy Elliot Making History

Jasmine Mitchell: Missy Elliot made history on January 12, 2019 when she became the first female rapper to be inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. FI-NA-LLY! Even though it took waaayyyyy too long for this to happen, I’m glad she’s finally getting her props.

Regina King

Kellé Whitney: It’s also been a loooong time coming, but my good sis Regina King FINALLY received her first Oscar Nomination. She’s been in classics like Friday (95’), Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson and Tupac (93’), Boyz n the Hood (91’), Jerry Mcquire (96’), Ray (04’), just to name a few. Oh…and she’s Riley and Huey from The Boondocks! King is a legend, hands down. Hopefully this will be a first of many previously snubbed getting the recognition they deserve.

MONEY

Kellé Whitney: What’s better than a black billionaire? One that donates back to HBCUs! Robert F. Smith, founder and CEO of Vista Equity, donated $1.5 million to Morehouse College. Now that’s what I’m talking about!! Think of all the things that could be accomplished if more of the wealthy in our community invested back into the community, at least in education.

Cyntoia Brown

Delmarshae Walker: Claps are in order for Cyntoia Brown as she was officially granted full clemency from prison and is set to be released on August 7th. This is a story I’ve been following closely over the last few months. After doing my own research and investigations online, it was very clear that this woman was wrongly charged, mainly due to our injustice legal system. She was sentenced at 16 years old and tried as an adult. Brown will be released when she’s 31.

Little

Meliabia: Black Girl Magic is off to a sprint this 2019. Marsai Martin is the youngest executive producer in her newest movie “Little”. This movie is going to be hilarious not to mention they have the most glow’d up cast ever with the likes of Issa Rae, Regina Hall, and Justin Hartley (From “This is Us” who has his black card). This is huge, and I am so excited to see how Marsai Martin and Issa Rae continue to change the film industry.

Black Dollars

Monet Victoria: The power of the black dollar is very real and we have to start using it more wisely. Zandra Cunningham, a teenager from Buffalo, New York, has started her own line of natural skin care products. This month in honor of Black History Month, Zandra’s products will be sold in Target. I will be definitely purchasing in support of all this black girl magic. Purchase on Target’s site or directly on Zandra’s.

I love my people because honestly…

Happy Black History Month Y’all!
