Self-isolation has transformed our homes into offices, cinemas, gyms, and even nightclubs. As we are stuck in our living spaces 24/7, cleaning work can add up to your daily routine, somewhere between working and cooking. So how do we get through it with minimum time and effort? Here are seven tricks by cleaning pros to make your housework fast, efficient and fun.

Trick 1: Set the limits

Try to limit your cleaning activities to 15–20 minutes per day. Don’t go for major tidying stints once every several weeks; instead, spend just a quarter of an hour daily focusing on a single room, table, cupboard or closet. Set your timer to guarantee that you stick to your time limit rather than let the work drag on for hours.

Trick 2: Don’t leave it till tomorrow

Banish the simple human-made imperfections around you right away — don’t let them dry out. Wipe off toothpaste splashes, watermarks on bathroom mirrors or coffee stains on your kitchen stove as soon as they appear.

Trick 3: Organize your home

Designate a place for everything, including waste. Place garbage containers strategically in every room so that you don’t waste your time on going to your kitchen area — the risk of having an unwanted bite is immense. Have you already installed one of these apps? Put a basket in your working area to shed those unwanted papers or snack wrappings. A small bin for used sponges, cotton swabs or tissues will help to keep your bathroom spotless.

Trick 4: Progress is key

Cleaning gadgets — like robotic spin mops which you can set up to run on a daily schedule — will save you time and trouble. They can also improve your water and electricity bills. By washing your cups and plates in a dishwasher, you use up less water than if you do the same dishload by hand. And don’t forget to shop around for robotic floor polishers and robotic window cleaners.

Trick 5: Move from top-down

Start with the top shelves and ceiling lights, then work your way down to the tables, lower shelves and floorboards. By doing this, you can avoid repeated mopping and hoovering.

Trick 6: Bathroom goes last

If you have decided to go through all your scrubbing in one day, save the bathroom for the very end as the dirt from other rooms is bound to land on the bathroom surfaces when you wash the rags, sponges and other cleaning equipment.

Trick 7: Add some culture. And style

Do you think cleaning is boring? Put on some music or an audiobook — and tidying-up will become fun and enriching.

If, despite everything, you still can’t warm up to your dusting and floor-scrubbing, remember: once self-isolation is over, you will finally be able to call in a cleaner!
