The saying tells us that “wine is fine, but liquor is quicker.” And if you’re like me, rum is one of the choices in your liquor cabinet that you reach for the quickest. So, of course, when I’m feeling thirsty, it’s time to celebrate one of my favorite drinks with a collection of quotes.

1. “Rum, n. Generically, fiery liquors that produce madness in total abstainers.”
-Ambrose Bierce

2. “Rum is tonic that clarifies the vision, and sets things in true perspective.”
-Brian D’Ambrosio

3. “Fifteen men on the Dead Man’s Chest
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”
-Robert Louis Stevenson

4. “Only, in Haiti, I realized, is it possible to drink rum and haggle with a god.”
-Wade Davis

5. “Wine is crying juice. Rum is worse.”
-Retta

6. “There’s naught, no doubt, so much the spirit calms as rum and true religion.”
-Lord Byron
