As I close out this initial 27-part phase of my “Jigsaw Gens” series, I’ve surprised even myself by how much more I’ve learned about ageism. It really is a cyclical process. In every single era of American history, we’ve had older voices and younger voices trying to outshout each other…and middle-aged voices trying to outshout that noise.
In. Every. Single. Era.
It may seem more pronounced, nowadays, because of today’s social media stigmatism and the 24-hour news cycle. And, it’s true that perhaps generational differences are more top-of-mind for more people, these days, due to that sensationalism.
But the differences themselves are nothing new.
For a little more than a year now, I’ve been profiling American generations across the centuries. My first step was defining and characterizing the eight generational cohorts from our modern history…
