“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” — Marcus Aurelius

In a world that is increasingly complex and uncertain, people are looking for ways to live a meaningful life. One philosophy that has gained popularity in recent years is Stoicism. Stoicism is a practical philosophy that emphasizes self-control, rationality, and inner peace.

Thanks to none other than Ryan Holiday for helping us learn Stoicism through his amazing work The Daily Stoic.

Stoicism teaches us that we cannot control external events, but we can control our reactions to them. By practicing self-control and rationality, we can develop a sense of inner peace that is not dependent on external circumstances. This means that we can find meaning and fulfillment in life regardless of what happens around us.

Stoicism also emphasizes the importance of focusing on what is within our control. By accepting the things we cannot change and focusing on the things we can, we can avoid wasting time and energy on things that are beyond our control. This helps us to live more meaningful lives by focusing on what truly matters.

Another important aspect of Stoicism is the practice of “virtue ethics.” Virtue ethics is the idea that living a good life involves developing good character traits, such as wisdom, courage, justice, and self-control. By practicing these virtues, we can become better people and live more fulfilling lives.

Stoicism also encourages us to focus on the present moment. By living in the present and not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, we can fully experience the richness of life. This helps us to find meaning and fulfillment in the present moment and not get caught up in regrets or anxiety.

Stoicism has influenced many great thinkers throughout history, including Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca. Today, it is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as people seek ways to cope with the stresses and uncertainties of modern life.

We can’t compare philosophies in terms of best or worst. That is personal.

But, whether you are looking for a way to cope with stress and anxiety or simply want to live a more fulfilling life, Stoicism is a philosophy worth exploring.
