What is the common understanding of the word responsibility?
Responsibility is an everyday word
We heard it as children when we were told to be responsible. We see it when we explore potential jobs to learn their responsibilities. We are often willing to accept responsibility, yet we also decline responsibility because we don’t want the consequences if we fail to fulfill what is expected.
The word responsibility carries a cultural weight. Here are some definitions from Oxford Languages that indicate the burden of responsibility:
the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone
the state or fact of being accountable or to blame for something
the opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions without authorization
a moral obligation to behave correctly toward or in respect of
a thing that one is required to do as part of a job, role, or legal obligation
