People love to talk about the best exercises to build muscle. Compound movements like squats, deadlifts and overhead presses usually make everyone’s top 5, and rightfully so. The science is pretty clear on their effectiveness.

But what if I told you one of the best ways to build muscle can be found in one of the last places you’d look?

Lace up your running shoes my friends. We’re headed to the track.

Sprinting as a muscle builder

“Scott there must be a gas leak in your apartment. There’s no way running promotes muscle growth.”

When it comes to distance running, I agree. It’s nearly impossible to build muscle when you’re spending most of your energy logging all those miles. But sprinting? Sprinting absolutely contributes to muscle growth.

Just look at Usain Bolt. The dude is positively jacked. Same with fellow Olympic sprinters Michael Johnson and Florence Griffith-Joyner. All layered with slabs of muscle during the prime of their careers.

Quite the contrast compared to distance running great Eliud Kipchoge, for example.
