The Double Edge of Meghan’s Mental Health Revelation

It’s been some time since the Sussexes interview with Oprah aired, and I am still having a hard time with the message Meghan Markle transmitted about mental health. I wasn’t planning on watching the piece, but I am writing regularly again which means I search for ways to procrastinate. I live with deadlines and revisions that I tend to put off to the last minute. Still, the thought of delaying some needed edits by watching a billionaire celebrity interviewer sit with a mega millionaire royal couple to discuss why their lives are imperfect held zero interest for me, at least initially. I do get it: you can be rich and unhappy. One doesn’t preclude the other.

On that particular day, my most pressing concern was to get the toilet to flush properly in the apartment, and to forage for some groceries. I needed to leave the toilet running so I could get back from the store before dark — once the sun sets, my street gets active in terms of police presence and the occasional gunshot. So it’s fair to say there’s a bit of a disconnect between me and people who inhabit castles.

To digress: I have never thought much about the royals one way or the other. They seem like slightly clueless but mostly well-meaning people who don’t fully understand the secular world. Royals are both familiar and alien…
