New dual cameras create amazing opportunities for 3D photography : a new land to explore for advanced technology apps.

Apple Keynote — September 12th, 2018

“Dual-camera phones are the future of mobile photography “

In 2016 the Verge published an article : “Dual camera phones are the future of mobile photography”. It was a few months before Apple released its first dual-camera device (iPhone 7 Plus). At the time they announced the shift in the industry led by LG and Huawei.

“This spring, LG and Huawei have led the way with their new Android flagships, introducing two very different dual-camera systems that nevertheless signal the direction that the entire industry is about to head in.” (Vlad Savov, The Verge)

This feeling was rapidly confirmed by market forecasts. In 2017 less than 8% of the market was equipped with dual camera devices. It will be over 53% in 2020. This is obviously the biggest trend of mobile photography for the next five years. Apple didn’t pave the way but its last Keynote left no doubt : this is a main focus for Tim Cook.

3D photography : the “hidden treasure” of dual cameras

To most of the buyers the assets of dual cameras are pretty unclear. They know that they are able to make better quality pictures and most of all they saw a new camera mode appearing on their iPhone : the “Portrait” mode. “Portrait” mode will keep the subject sharp while creating an artfully blurred background like this photo just above. It is what gives this professional look to the picture…

But what remains to be discovered is that advanced technology apps use this dual camera properties to create 3D imagery…

Facebook will soon bring 3D photos to the news feed

Five months ago, Mark Zuckerberg announced at the F8 keynote that we’ll soon be able to post 3D photos to our news feed (see below). Facebook didn’t tell much about this new feature but one thing is sure is that we are soon going to see them popping up everywhere in our feeds.

According to a spokesman for the social network, anyone can take a portrait mode picture taken on a dual-lens smartphone and upload it on Facebook. The resulting photo has a 3D effect such that scrolling past makes them appear three-dimensional. The feature was announced to come this summer. We are so excited here… 🤗

Pops Technology brings it on paper

At Pops we are kings in what’s coming next in photography! After being the first to release video prints (Boomerang, Live Photos, Snap Videos on paper), we are proud to announce the first 3D photos with your own pictures thanks to Pops Technology AND the new iPhone X series! We promise, they are absolutely mind-blowing…

As technological leaders in the lenticular industry we are today at a crossroad between innovation in mobile photography and photo printing. We are opening a new photography era thanks to new devices. Two years ago when we launched the project with our team we couldn’t expect being in such a strategic position in the photography market.

Pops Technology is the only one in the world able to create 3D on paper (no 3D glasses) from your personal pictures. At Pops, we are all the more excited as this feature (in public beta now on our application) will be officially released on October 25, probably just after Facebook releases its 3D photos on our FB feed and one day before Apple releases its new iPhone Xr.
