Part Four: You’re the Center of the Universe (and so am I)
Astrophysics has delivered a few, eye-popping discoveries in the last century.
- In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that that universe is expanding — the fundamental basis of the popular Big Bang Theory
- In the late 1990s astronomers realized that this expansion is occurring at an accelerated rate (laws of gravity and inertia be damned!)
- After a flurry of calculations, this led cosmologists to the understanding that over 95% of the universe is invisible, immeasurable and indescribable to the human mind
But perhaps the most intriguing discovery is where the universe is expanding from. Where is this center from which all matter is accelerating away?
Well, the center of this expansion is exactly where you are. Oh, and it’s where I am too. And it’s somewhere near Andromeda, or in GN-z11, the farthest known point in the universe.
You see, the universe is expanding from wherever you are observing this expansion. Put another way, every point in the physical universe is expanding away from every other point.
In this regard, you are the center of the universe, and so am I.
Of course, it may actually be more accurate to state that the universe has no ‘center’ … and that makes our universe even cooler and more enigmatic.
You see, if we were to draw dots on a balloon to represent stars and galaxies, and then inflate it, the dots would appear to move away from each other as the balloon grew in size. There would be no external ‘center’ from which the expansion happens, and every ‘dot’ on the balloon would observe every other dot moving away from it, in all directions.
Which is what we observe in the skies around us. Which means that we are living on the three-dimensional surface of a four dimensional sphere.
