A Solar Energy Eclipse Set For Indonesia

A Solar Energy Eclipse Set For Indonesia

Indonesian Ambition

There’s no hiding the fact that Indonesia is a top-5 coal producer. But it’s also the largest producer of biofuels. With its incredible clean-energy potential, this large country has set out to increase its biofuel production capacity and increase its burgeoning renewable energy sector. An aim aligned with its neighbour Australia’s new government’s ambitious plans to exploit its rather untapped renewable energy advantage. Similarly, Australia and Indonesia are large exporters of fossil fuels across the Indo-Pacific. They are both attempting to reshape the way they produce and consume energy.

The Indonesian effect

Why does this matter? Because Indonesia is the de facto leader of South East Asia’s major multilateral institution, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The region’s largest population and the second-largest democracy in the world. What Indonesia does makes a large impact, and the world can feel it at scale. For example, global superpowers have to scramble to cover the gaps if it reduces fossil fuel exports. If the country begins to make environmentally conscious energy market decisions, we’re all better off.

The Indonesian government has been delivering on its goal to provide access to electricity nationwide. As a result, upwards of 77 million Indonesians have been connected to the grid since 2000. Indonesia’s global impact is understood well when considering approximately 55% of the total number of people connected to reliable electricity since 2000, in Southeast Asia, is due to Indonesian efforts. Indonesia’s government has reckoned with an energy crisis as we all have since the beginning of 2022 and has declared some new directions for energy production.

Calling out for IOEN in Indonesia

There are plans for hybrid generators running from solar and diesel, microgrid solar solutions that are completely off-grid, and micro-hydro power generation. Better energy grid resilience has been the memo received worldwide and Indonesia’s calculus is changing. Resilience and stability are now driving the transition rather than immediate commercial returns.

If you’re in our Indonesian IOEN community, or you’d like to be, join us on Telegram below. Follow us on Twitter or wherever suits you, because we’d like to hear from you. IOEN’s protocol is open-source, and cleaner energy solutions are waiting to be discovered together.
