A question we frequently get asked is: “I want to be a part of a virtual microgrid, but I don’t have solar panels or a battery. Can I still participate?”
Well, guess what, you don’t need solar panels or batteries to be a part of an IOEN microgrid, and earn rewards!
The energy system of the future needs everyone to participate, and we’ve built IOEN from the ground up to facilitate this. You can make a contribution to your local energy ecosystem (and be rewarded for doing so) with appliances as simple as your drier, air-conditioner, or your hot water system.
A bit of context first:
We often get told that the answer to the climate crisis is to put as many solar panels on rooftops as possible. Whilst it is true that we need more renewable energy to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, a complication that arises from renewable technologies is that our grids were not designed to receive large amounts of power from several households simultaneously. The grids we have now were designed to produce energy from large centralised fossil-fuel powerplants, and distribute this energy to many households.
So why is this an issue?
As a community integrates more clean energy resources, a new challenge arises. Large amounts of solar power is generated in the middle of the day and not enough of it is used, flooding the network and overloading the grid.
This problem can be resolved by households and businesses shifting their consumption patterns to align with renewable energy production, but right now there is no system that incentivises people to do so.
That’s where you can help. Earn IOEN rewards for using power at the best times.
The IOEN protocol rewards users for consuming power when clean energy is most abundant, helping stabilise the grid and maximise the effective use of clean energy. That’s right, you can get rewarded for using energy! What this looks like in practice is, instead of doing the washing when you get home at night, setting it to go on in the middle of the day, and earning rewards for doing so. These rewards come in the form of IOEN’s layer-2 currency IOEC.
Users can also be rewarded for using less energy when there is a surge in demand, helping maintain grid harmony.
