Google has partnered with Intel to bring Android Things to its Joule 570x computer board. This partnership will allow makers to build android applications on the the micro controller.

Android Things

Android Things is a lightweight android-based device OS for the Internet of Things. It enables developers build professional IoT products without previous knowledge of embedded system design.

Intel Joule 570x

Joule 570x has the processing capabilities for 4K graphics which makes the board ideal for developing IoT devices with screens. The board has an Atom T5700 processor, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 16GB of storage, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. With these specifications, the board could be considered overkill for most IoT devices and other, cheaper options could be more attractive. Right now, only three boards — Raspberry Pi, Intel’s Edison, and NXP‘s Pico i.MX6UL — support Android Things.

A standout feature in Joule 570x is a RealSense 3D depth camera, which can recognize objects and measure distances.

Cloud

Android Things is the latest attempt from Google to connect the dots between the cloud and devices. With Cloud, makers will be able to build devices with the company’s machine-learning technologies like voice and speech recognition.
