Liberia: Another Radio Station Attacked

A Liberian radio station based in Monrovia, Joy FM, became the third radio station to be attacked in the past few weeks, according to Reporters Without Borders. Radio stations critical of Liberian President George Weah have been attacked by unnamed men in the past few weeks.

Vrye Weekblad to relaunch in digital form

Media group Tiso Blackstar has decided to resurrect the Anti-Apartheid Afrikaans national weekly newspaper, shut down in 1994, as a digital paper. The paper will remain in Afrikaans and the new crew reunites founding editor Max du Preez investigative journalist and best-selling author Jacques Pauw and journalist and Anneliese Burgess.

Editors condemn EFF

Two months before the South African election, the Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Julius Malema has published the personal contact number of journalist, producer and broadcasting host Karima Brown which has resulted in EFF supporters sending her threatening messages. The South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) has condemned the EFF’s actions.

Tanzanian government suspends newspaper

The Tanzanian government suspended the Citizen newspaper for seven days. The government said they suspended the paper because it published false news about the depreciation of the shilling against the dollar on February 23.

Fellowships African journalists should apply for by March

This is a reminder that applications for these fellowships close by the end of March.

New opportunities for March ALERT:

The African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) is offering journalists and others fellowships to attend the AFRICINIC 30 Summit. Successful fellows will receive an award to partially cover travel and living expenses associated with attending the Summit.

The deadline is 15 March 2019.

Workshop to support organisations promoting and protecting Media Self Regulation in Africa . The Swedish development agency, SIDA is organising a training for people working to strengthen media self regulation in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Government, media and civil society organisations can nominate individuals to participate. The workshop is part of a long-term programme that aims to strengthen links between organisations that can work together to strengthen media self regulation.
