It takes a bold and brazen woman to rock the “mob wife” style that I discussed in my previous article. But sometimes it takes a simple pencil skirt, tidy hair and a black turtleneck with a pair of specs (prescription or not) to make a fashion statement. It is the woman who makes a strong impression and not the clothes. A simple look can suffice, and that is why the “office core” or “office siren” aesthetic is so in fashion right now. The sexiness of the 90s is subdued with today’s appreciation for understated sophistication. Think signature Phoebe Philo meets Miu Miu 2023.

Unlike the “mob wife” whose roots and influence stem from cultural and ethnic groups, the “office core” style has no origin in race, ethnicity or religion, perhaps it is anchored more so in the origin of the corporate world, therefore the world of modern, western capitalist society found in metropolitan areas.

An “office siren” is equal parts masculine and feminine. Heavy on the hip sways down the hallway and judgmental eye rolls are her signature. She has the brains and beauty and the entitlement for success. Short simple nails and a buttoned-up fitted cardigan are just as sensual. She thrives in the corporate world, for she has a hard outer shell. Resilient and calculating, she gets far in her career. An office siren dons confidently a pencil skirt with a slit slightly too high and the men in the office are at her feet. Nonetheless, come the end of office hours, the report has been submitted, the coffee has buzz worn off and she lets her hair down out of her unfussy up-do and has her dosage of fun. This girl knows how to party and drink. Her rather unembellished look is juxtaposed by a rather free-spirited, humorous and wild side. Unlike the “mob wife,” she will not let a man tie her down. If you hear the click-clack of her Manolo Blahnik stilettos coming your way down the freshly polished office floors, get ready for some heat. She either got the gossip or you better pack your box, you’re getting fired.

One can always resort to cinema for a dose of inspiration. In this day and age, being tied down to a full time office job is not a prerequisite. You can dress as a corporate girly wherever and whenever you want even when you WFH.
