Fantastic experience

Running Remote is the biggest remote work conference in the world. This time about 400+ people attended from all over the world. I met super passionate remote work evangelists.

That was an awesome experience and I got so many insights.

I really appreciate the organizer’s effort to make this happen.

Why I was inspired? I just found that building the future of work together is very cool thing to do. Also I am super optimist about coming up tech innovation in order to solve the bottleneck. Lastly, people there were so collaborative and supportive. We are changing the world together. This is very exciting.

Very cool mission

Needless to say but 50% of global population is working people.

This is obviously huge market.

Even a small improvement in workplace has a huge impact.

For example, cloud storage service could eliminate paper documents from our office.

Remote work has many challenges.

As a software company, we did tons of UX research on remote working in recent months.

I can name thousands of problems in remote working.

That means we need so many tools, methods in order to solve all of them. Again this is the very exciting opportunity because people’s pain is big.

Remote work has huge benefit.

In the conference, I met so many people who became location free workers. That is wonderful because they can spend much more time with loved ones. They can travel like digital nomads.

They can save lot of living cost by avoiding expensive city like SanFrancisco, NY, London, Tokyo etc.

These are very cool mission to achieve.

We can definitely make better world by giving remote opportunity to people.

Remote work is like a religion because we have a believer and a nonbeliever. In other words, remote work is a movement and a culture. Remote work is a lifestyle. I felt like I am selling a fashion brand.

Tech innovation

I can definitely say that Slack made millions of new opportunities for remote worker.

Nowadays Slack is an essential tool for us.

It is very important tool for team collaboration.

I can even divide the era like “before Slack” and “after Slack”.

People’s working style has been definitely changed then.

I can predict this kind of very productive tools will come up in the market in the next 5 to 10 years.

Since we are running Team AI, which is the biggest machine learning research community in Japan, I am also very optimistic about AI implementation in remote work use cases.

Currently very few people/tools use AI for remote working.

This means we have a vast white space.

Lots of additional automation, analysis and productivity improvement can be done in near future.

We also commit ourselves to keep solving our own remote work problem. Hopefully we will find an additional app idea through internal remote work experience. Solving our own pain is an effective starting point of successful app.

We will keep trying lots of idea including out of box ones.

Passionate community

As I mentioned above, we are running a machine learning community and I am a strong believer of community.

Community has a magic.

When people with the same mission got tighter and help each other, the probability of success becomes x10 or x100.

Since the community is still small compared to non-remote workers, people here are supporting each other and there is no competition in this market.

At the same time I can say that we are all remote work evangelists. Majority of the world is remote work non-believers.

We should keep convincing them to change the mind by presenting our successful case study.

Again, for this kind of movement, the community is essential.

About ourselves

My company build Kiara — a real-time translation chatbot for Slack.

We are currently removing the language barrier in international collaboration.

Through the heavy UX research and our AI community, we will keep launching the bunch of useful remote working tools to the market.

We will keep contributing to this fantastic community who seriously want to change the world.

Lastly, we had 15 sessions throughout 2 days in Bali.

All fantastic talks. The video will be uploaded to YouTube.

In meantime, here I share my favorite remote work talk from last year’s Running Remote.
