It’s a desire,
An addiction,
Pain.
The first mouthful
Brings a stinging sensation,
An unnatural pleasure to the
Eating experience of which we
Find joy in life.
Even when there is little joy,
Food can bring some relief
To the long old daily grind.

Mouthful after mouthful
Finds intense stinging sensation
Upon the lips,
Rips through the mouth
Across the palate
To burn the tonsils penetrates the nose
Stinging in the backwash.

Cascading down the prickling throat to deliver
Heat sensation into the stomach
Which will ring sting in the morning,
Reminding me chilli has not finished with me
While taking its leave.

That painful wave goodbye
Is its final triumphant encore
After a night of discomfort
In a painful swollen belly.

And so on to the next mouthful,
More heat, more pain,
Building more intensely,
The chilli has taken on the form
Of a challenge that must-see finished!
To become the champion of my own chilli challenge.

Heat upon heat, sweating, burning, beer.

The last mouthfuls see a burnt-out mess
Of a triumphant broken fool.
