My Parents Are Dating Different People Now

And I don’t really know who these people are.

Ever since my parents’ divorce about a year ago and a half ago (I wrote an entire article about it that you can read here), everybody in my family has gone their separate ways. I’m pursuing my interests, my sister is carving her own path, and my parents are each living their best lives, independently. And I appreciate that about them!

My parents never quite mastered healthy communication with each other — everything would either escalate into an argument or be swept under the rug. There was no middle ground. When communication is lacking, it’s only a matter of time until things fall apart — well, in their case, it took 30 years. What’s truly fascinating is that they’ve both found new partners with whom they can communicate maturely, and they’re both happier than ever. The post-divorce glow is real! I can see it radiating from both of them.

I still don’t know who my dad is dating. It remains a mystery, a secret he chooses not to divulge (but I strongly suspect it’s the same woman he had an affair with before the breakdown of his marriage to Mom). I used to judge him for that, as I don’t see any valid reason to hide a new partner. Both my sister and I are grown-ups and fully understand why mom and dad chose to go down the divorce route.
