What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Perhaps it was the time sometime told you to always give 100% at work, or 10% Monday, 20% Tuesday, 40% Wednesday, 20% Thursday, and 10% Friday.

Wait! That’s not good advice.

Well, then it could’ve been the time a person said to find work that ‘fascinates’ you. That way you can just sit and look at it for hours.

Hold on! That’s just telling you to procrastinate.

Okay, let’s get serious for a moment. Our team at Kyivstar has a lot of wisdom to share about having success in your career.

So, read further — you’ll be motivated to not only tell jokes like those above, but also strive to accomplish all that you dream of.

1. Be like Indiana Jones. Always investigate and learn as much as possible on your adventures. Then, you’ll be ready to find rare treasures. Who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a mythological artifact and folks will tell stories about you for ages. That would be cool.

“People ask me the difference between working in journalism and working as a Data Scientist and I tell them it’s the same. Both are all about analyzing and finding answers. Even when I travel abroad, I’m soaking up what I can. I’m investigating all the time — like I’m still trying to be Indiana Jones or a real-life treasure hunter.”

2. Did you know that there are robots that can learn chess moves and strategies from experience? That spells trouble for human players. So, you may never be able to beat a robot at chess, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t be friends. In fact, that friendship could make life much, much better for you.

“New technologies are guides for brand campaigns to effectively put creative ideas into action. For instance, data is a key resource we have for finding insights, coming up with ideas, and measuring the success of our campaigns. We absolutely must take advantage of all our tools.”

3. It’s sad that many people are afraid to sing. There are lots of beautiful voices that go unheard. Don’t let fear hold you back. Pick up the microphone and see what you can do (i.e. don’t be afraid to go for it).

“All of my early work at Kyivstar was so fresh and interesting. There were general guidelines for how to handle technical tasks, but I was given the space to come up with my own solutions. I jumped in and took risks. This challenged me in a way that’s helped me improve tremendously.”

Artem, head of the traffic management unit at Kyivstar

4. Confucius wrote, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Doing that alone may take a while, though. Don’t you think? Get the right team together. Then, you’ll be able to move mountains much more efficiently.

“My work is to turn Kyivstar into a truly digital company. To do this, we must have a variety of great talents working together. I also want people who are familiar with customer needs, because being digital is all about making lives easier for the customer. That’s why we’ve transitioned a lot of call center people to the digital department.”

5. Where would you go if you could travel through time and space like Dr. Who? You’d certainly journey to an exciting place, like Atlantis. By the way, did the ancient island civilization of Atlantis exist? I guess you can find that out if you become like Dr. Who. Anyway, the point is this: Go outside your comfort zone; it will get your mind working more creatively.

“I love Dr. Who. That show has enlightened me on the importance of searching far and wide for ideas, like going to small towns and talking with extreme users of our products and services!”

6. How can you hit the bullseye? You not only keep throwing darts, you also make adjustments on your throw so that it’s more accurate. This is the way you should approach your work, with persistence and a willingness to test and make changes.

“Modern companies should empower leaders and talents, make entrepreneurship a core discipline like marketing or finance, and take risks and test products. You have to embrace the agile way of doing things and consistently make improvements. You must also understand your capabilities and minimize waste everywhere.”
