Have you ever thought about taking ice skating lessons but felt you were too old?

Sometimes, it might seem as if only young people can ice skate, but that’s not quite true. Skating can be enjoyed at all ages! Here are some reasons why it’s not too late for you to skate to great:

1. You join a welcoming community.

Ice skating brings people from all walks of life together to share a common passion. When you start skating, you’ll be welcomed into a community of skaters who want to be your friend and help you throughout your skating journey.

Whether you’re learning new skills, striving for a big goal or celebrating a recent accomplishment, you’ll have a group of like-minded peers with you every step of the way!

2. Skating can be a family affair.

If someone in your family is already on the ice, why not join them? Skating can be a wonderful family activity that brings you together and strengthens your bond.

If no one in your family skates, make it a weekly bonding event! There’s nothing like learning something new with your loved ones.

3. There are countless physical health benefits!

Skating has endless health benefits. These are just a few:

· You’ll burn many calories without even noticing because you’re having so much fun (or you’re extra focused on your practice!).

· You’ll build strong leg, glute and core muscles from pushing across the ice.

· There are also great cardiovascular health benefits of skating! This aerobic workout lowers the risk of heart disease and builds your endurance.

· Skating is easier on the joints than running and other sports, making it a fairly low-impact sport perfect for older adults looking for an enjoyable physical activity.

4. Enjoy mental health benefits.

In addition to all the great physical health benefits, skating helps your mental health, too! Not only will you build confidence and self-esteem from feeling so awesome on the ice, you’ll relieve stress and ultimately live a happier life.

Skating outdoors is even better! The fresh air and Vitamin D is an instant mood booster. Let’s not forget the beautiful views, whether you’re in the middle of a city or on a frozen lake surrounded by mountains.

5. You have the ability to compete.

Did you know that U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US Speedskating offer adult competition tracks? Adult figure skating programs range from beginner competitions to qualifying events that lead to the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships. Adult Hockey offers programs from Pond Hockey to Adult Nationals. US Speedskating even offers a master’s track for skaters ages 30 and up where they can compete anywhere from the local level to the international circuit!

If you’re just starting out, there’s also Compete USA. This beginner competition offers adult basic skating events where you can put your skills to the test. Read more here.

6. Gain a sense of accomplishment.

How many people can say they can do a waltz jump or perform a hat trick? What about speeding around the rink at top speeds? When you start skating, you’ll be able to say, “I can do that.” What better reason to start skating than to feel good about your achievements?

7. It’s fun!

We wouldn’t be out on the ice if it weren’t a blast! You will always remember the first time you glide across the ice, the wind in your face and the cold air tickling your nose. Skating is just pure fun. You feel like you’re flying, and you can’t get the same feeling anywhere else.

Learn to Skate USA offers a comprehensive adult skating curriculum that allows beginner adult skaters to progress through the levels and enjoy skating.
