Surprisingly, Ulysses S. Grant (R-Illinois) was an excellent president. Unfortunately, history ignores Grant’s achievements because of racism.

Grant was America’s greatest general who won the Civil War and saved the Union. In 1868, grateful voters elected Grant president. As president, Grant restored the authority and respect the office lost during President Andrew Johnson’s (D-Tennessee) disastrous administration.

Congress tried to impeach Johnson because of his opposition to Reconstruction. Reconstruction was the Republican program to rebuild the South and secure equal rights for black Americans. Johnson, a Southerner, and former slave owner, wanted segregation.

Restoring the presidency’s reputation was just one of Grant’s achievements. American history ignored those achievements for almost 150 years because of racism and pride. In particular, Southerners wanted to destroy the reputation of the Illinois store clerk who humiliated their icon Robert E. Lee on the battlefield.
