I never have to buy anyone birthday presents,
Stress about recitals,
Or Dates.

No one keeps me up snoring,
Or asks me to help them move a couch,
Or to talk to them when they’re feeling down.

I can play my music loud,
Walk around the house naked,
Leave clothes and dirty plates on the floor.

You think I’d miss people,
Miss company,
And talking,
And laughter,
And warmth.

I do sometimes,
Every now and then.

But most of the time,
All I can think about,
Is the heartbreak,
The betrayal,
The fights,
The contempt bred from familiarity,
All the times I disappointed people,
All the times people disappointed me.

I can’t do people,
I tried,
And I can’t.

Perhaps I am weak,
A coward,
Selfish.
