Quench held Wendy tight. They lay in silence, bodies stiff with fear, eyes fixed on the door. The figure had gone.

“What was that?” whispered Quench.

“The door’s still open.”

“Don’t move, maybe he’s waiting outside.”

They lay still, listening. There was no sound. Quench stood, took Wendy’s hands and pulled her to her feet. They crept towards the entrance.

Quench looked through the opening. Flickering light sent shadows dancing over the hallway.

“There’s no one here.”

“This could be a trap,” said Wendy. “Why would someone help us escape?”

“I don’t know, but let’s get going. We’ll think about the reason later.”

Quench took Wendy’s hand and led her down the stairwell.

“Keep to the shadows.”

They came to the next floor. A burning torch on the wall of the landing lit their way. A passageway led off into darkness, the sound of voices in the distance.

“Let’s keep going down,” whispered Wendy.

They reached the entrance hall on the ground floor and tiptoed across to the open doorway…
