This has to be the most-awaited, anticipated iPhone, Apple is going to launch and this pandemic has put quite some efforts in it like delay in modems from Qualcomm. If you readers don’t know, this time Apple is using Qualcomm modems in their A14 Bionic to back the iPhone 12 Series with 5G.

If you want to read more on why the iPhone 12 Series will be late, I’ve got a nice Medium story dedicated to it.

Display

TBH, I’ve mixed feelings with the display, now that Apple is pushing OLED displays to all iPhone 12 Series, I’m happy that users will be able to enjoy those true blacks, punchy colors, wide viewing angle to make the experience a whole lot better on their base model as well.

At the same time, this OLED display and battery capacity makes it a little harder for Apple to implement a high refresh rate screen, although they tried, it doesn’t stand on their quality standards.

Below is the image shared by a trusted leaker Jon Prosser, which shows that Apple was repeatedly trying to implement a high refresh rate screen to iPhone 12 models but I guess it just didn’t work out for them.

It got confirmed that the 120Hz high refresh rate screen didn’t make it to the final mass production when Jon tweeted including that mass production started around 12 September, maybe earlier than that. I’m a little disappointed with this decision of Apple’s, now that a high refresh rate screen has become a basic part of the package in flagships, not having in iPhone 12 Series will suck, big time.

Hopefully, the 2021 iPhone will have LTPO panels which will allow the iPhones to switch the refresh rate from a minimal 1Hz to a whopping 120Hz refresh rate.

It is confirmed that Apple is pushing 4 new iPhones this year, a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini (yeah, you read it right!), a 6.1-inch iPhone 12, a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and a massive 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max with Super-Retina XDR Display all over the series.

Camera

It seems Apple has found its sweet spot in the 12MP sensor since they’ve been using it for quite some years, started with the iPhone 6s (2015), but with improved results with every new launch. Likely, this time won’t be any different.

There will be a new component sitting along with those sensors. Yeah, I’m talking about the LiDAR sensor which first debuted with iPad Pro 2020, it takes AR capabilities to a whole new level. No wonder, why Apple has focused more on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence with their A14 Bionic chipset.

Most likely the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will boast this sensor along with a Wide, Ultrawide, and Telephoto Lens which will help them with the better and more accurate depth of field, and enhance the AR capabilities to several possibilities, it’s just a matter of time. It interests me that if Apple is bringing the LiDAR sensor into iPhones, they will surely make wise use of it.

Performance

Every. Single. Time. Apple has launched its new A-series chipset, it raised the bar to a new level for other processor manufacturers. That is no different this time.

Apple unveiled its newest, greatest, fastest A-series chipset, A14 Bionic, World’s First chipset based on 5nm process technology in its ‘Time Flies’ Event held on 15th September. It already powers the iPad Air 4th gen.

According to 9to5Mac, A14 Bionic gives a 30% faster CPU & almost 70% faster GPU than A13 Bionic which is bonkers, if taken as reference. Now, if these are considered here, Apple has planned several things for LiDAR, so that the GPU could be used for intensive graphics tasks.

5G

This is the first time, Apple is bringing 5G enabled iPhones and they will make it big. They might even dedicate the whole event to it. Apple partnered with Qualcomm so that they could use their 5G modems in their chipsets. This is a nice addition & much-needed addition in iPhones.

Design

Apple was stuck with rounded edges chassis since what, the iPhone 6 which debuted in 2014. But, newer iPhones will have a new design, well not new, but Apple’s most craved design. Those boxy design that gave a rich look to the iPhone 4, iPhone 5, SE.

The iPhone 12 is coming with that same design, you may get that nostalgic sensation when you’d get hold of it. And, it’s been quite some time since I last saw that design in any smartphone, I’d like to see how Apple implement it now, but with the notch like iPhone X & 11 series.

Talking of notch, this time too, the notch isn’t getting small or ditched. The iPhone 12 Mini would likely have a small notch so that it could fit time and network strength without just shoving it in there. As a reference you could see that pretty render I started this pretty story with, huh?

Let’s talk about colors, Apple is good with colors, right? The iPhone XR, iPhone 11 has a plethora of color options to choose from. So, this time Apple is coming with two new colors, Orange(not sure) and Navy Blue. Looking at the images below, both look refreshing. (i like the blue one more👀)

iOS 14

Well, we’re talking about iPhone 12, so including iOS 14 becomes kinda important, right? And this version of iOS, of course, it does.

We all most probably know what’s new with iOS 14, but I’ll tell you what’s my favorites amongst them.
Starting off with widgets, widgets are around with us since Android first released, and since then they’ve been developed and improved. This time Apple pulls it off, and they made it so intuitive that I started using them again. Take Google’s for example, Google search widget doesn’t look that minimalist and attractive on Android than it looks on iOS. The widgets are deeply integrated with apps, hence data rich.

Now, as a part of widget, the Smart Stack comes in real handy, you could swipe through widget and it includes almost every Apple App, be it Apple Music, Weather, Apple TV+, and so much more.

Picture in Picture mode(PiP) is implemented better and most importantly is smooth throughout the use. I mean, you can pinch to resize the window, you can minimise it and the audio will keep playing, that’s good. Coming to a huge step, privacy is on next level in iOS 14, I’ve dedicated a whole story on that, do give it a read.

This time Apple is ditching the earphones and cables, suprising and interesting, right? Read this story for more.
