❓What is Success?

Success is a result of feeling joy, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment that makes the journey to success more fun. Approach things with a sense of adventure, spirit of play and sincerity (not seriousness). Approach it with a role of someone with power, skills, control, the ability to communicate and most of all, confidence (if you can’t do it, be someone else who can AKA an alter ego).

⏩ What am I Talking About?

This is what Dr. Ali Abdaal says, from his recent book, Feel-Good Productivity, a book 3 years in making and the result of 7 years of YouTube. So, as a fan of his work, I read his book on Kindle and took a ton of highlights.

To be fair, he has wrote the exact same thing he has said in all of his YouTube videos, along with a summary of humungous amount of research papers. His book is worth a check out, as his concepts and ideas are great and way more energizing. This book stands out in the crowd of “self-improvement books”, as he just doesn’t talk about techniques, but how to get yourself to do those techniques (honestly, that’s something I struggle with a little).

🪨 Why is it Hard Then Sometimes?

Sometimes, its just ⛸️ friction. When you’re doing nothing, it’s easier to do nothing, but when you’re doing something, it’s easier to just continue. Just do something for a few minutes, and you create inertia, snowballing it onto an bigger snowball of work.

When you’re doing something, the environment matters. Not just the aesthetic, but the sound and even the smell. Everything around you matters, and it can be an obstacle providing friction, or tool to manipulate. This is where the quote, Out of sight, out of mind, is involved. Make the bad habits disappear and hard to access, but make the good ones easy and friction less.

When you’re procrastinating, find what’s negative and eliminate it. Make your tasks into smaller goals that are NICE (Near-term, Input-based, Controllable, Energizing). Doing too much things badly is pointless, but doing one thing great is awesome. So, understand your negativity, reduce your negativity and eliminate it. What you fear now may matter in 5 minutes, it may not matter that much in 5 days, and it won’t matter in 5 years.
