Every Monday morning on Ajobthing, everyone would required to set our goals for the week. This is how we started our weekdays, our weekly sprint starting line.

Setting goals is tricky business, if you like to play safe then you’d like to set it to the points that you thought definitely achievable. However, this mean, that you’ll only do what you already know. And by the end of the week you’ll be very much having the same skill from when you start. So here, we actually want to shoot for higher and higher results each week. But if you set it too high, then at the midweek you’ll be exhausted, frustrated, and then just give up your goals…

If you’re a swimmer, and next race is coming, currently your personal time for 100m sprint is 5 minutes. Sad. Average time for person your age should be around 2 minutes. So, if this week you target the same 5minutes time, then …. you’re still the same sad person right? Then, to be better than sad, you’ll want to to grow your swimming skill, e.g targeting 4 or 3 minutes for this week. And that’d be a good target. If you target 1 minutes, then unless you’re a superhero in a Hollywood movie.. its 99,99% chance that you’ll fail. By Wednesday you might just too fatigue to get up, or even too frustrated and stop swimming altogether.

This is the spirit that we’d like each of our team members have. Gradual growth. And one of the methods is to challenge themselves to achieve higher goals each week.

Monday Challenge

True, not all of us has the same awareness of our skillset or our current growth as professionals. Leave it to ourself, we’ll be most likely to set goals in the safe spot, where we’re confident that we’ll achieve it. That’s why, on Monday, each team regroup and then challenge each other. Each team member would present their goals for the week, and then the other members would challenge it. We call this session: Monday Challenge. We believe that by doing this we help each other grow.

A lot of skeptical people would doubt that the team will either be easy on their peers, or crush each other by challenging their team mates to unachievable goals which in turn would kill the result.

While actually, it’s quite simple to spot for negative team dynamics when it happens. We already had quarterly OKR set up, then we can break it down to monthly. On some of the team which result shows 1–2 days after the efforts is done, it’ll be more convenient. Monitor the percentage of OKR achievements. Also on Friday Reflections, if your team has achieved goal for several weeks while the OKR percentage didn’t move as expected, then definitely there’s something wrong on the teamwork. On some others, which have lag time before results shown will have a bit of challenge. But, at least monthly updates will show you the signals. If not then maybe you’d want to change your KRs.

This friendly challenges methods, is one of our effort to make sure that we all grow to be a better professional gradually. Together. As a team.
So we don’t get bored, and we hope we’ll be the one that our college friends can look up and ask.. why we’re doing soo good ;)
