Talented Designer Don Lam Joins MDT as Product Designer
We are excited to announce that Don Lam, a gifted designer based in Hong Kong, joins MDT as Product Designer! Don will be focused on designing MDT-related products and producing marketing assets. He graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK) in 2017 with a bachelor degree in Computer Science. So basically he is a designer who can code as well. When he is not designing, he likes to play guitar and computer games.
Here is Don’s story on how he majored in CS but ends up being a designer.
1.What is your previous work like?
I basically need to do everything about design, like designing posts, invitation cards, even producing event videos and animations. I also helped to debug for corporate website once in a while. My colleagues used to call me “the Apple Genius Bar in the office” or “omnipotent designer” because of my background in computer science lol. They always turned to me when they had difficulties using digital devices, especially Apple devices.
2.Did you learn designing or drawing from others or just by yourself?
I started to learn painting and designing by myself in high school. In the beginning, I imitated the design projects of others, studied how they did it, and established my own aesthetic standards and design intuition. Sometimes my teachers and classmates asked me to help design posters, blackboards and the like, which gave me the opportunities to practice painting skills. If there was something I didn’t know, I would just search it online or try to find answers in design books. I was intentionally developing the habit of self-learning.
3.How did you hone your design skills in college while majoring in Computer Science?
When I was at CUHK, I joined in the editorial team of campus newspaper and was responsible for the design department. At the time I was working part-time as well. In the beginning, I just developed corporate website as a engineer. After my boss found out that I was good at designing, I was assigned to take charge of all the design projects. Later on, many of my friends voluntarily introduced design projects to me since they knew that I was proficient in it, and I got more and more opportunities to improve my design skills by practicing.
4.What projects were you most proud of in college?
I participated in a competition with three classmates in college. We were asked to create a mobile game for kids who have learning disabilities. I was in charge of product design in the team, and we built a game called Galaxy Maze which earned us championship in the end! I was so excited because that was the first time for me to do user experience design and it was recognized by professional designers!
5.What’s your favorite design style?
My favorite design style is flat design and minimalist design. My favorite design brand is “Muji” because it perfectly combines simple design style with practical product functions. I basically go to Muji every week and just browse in the store, because their products are just so inspiring and enlightening.
The only designer I am following on social media is Mr. Xu Yuwen. He is a Chinese font designer. He usually shares his studies on Chinese fonts on social media, including trademark identification and logo design. I really admire his dedication and passion for aesthetics of Chinese font.
6.Why did you want to join MDT?
I am really passionate about MDT ecosystem we are building. I am personally very cautious about sharing data with tech companies. A lot of tech giants just use personal data to target audience and distribute ads. That makes me feel that my personal information is manipulated by them, and I was not aware of this at all. But with MDT, I can choose if I want to share my data, and I will get rewards for it. In this case I think people get to regain the control over their data, and will be more willing to share their data.
